In a significant political move, Colleen Makhubele, the former Johannesburg council speaker, is set to be sworn in as a member of Parliament, representing the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
Makhubele, who has had an extensive political career, joins the MK Party after a series of shifts in her political affiliations.
Makhubele’s Political Journey and Shift to MK Party
Previously a member of the Congress of the People (COPE), Makhubele was expelled just ahead of the highly anticipated May 29 elections.
She then founded the South African Rainbow Alliance (SARA) but made headlines in September when she left the party and decided to join the Zuma-led MK Party.
MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela announced that Makhubele, alongside Adil Nchabeleng, will be officially sworn in as members of Parliament on Tuesday, January 28.
According to Ndhlela, the appointments reinforce the party’s commitment to policies focused on transformative change, socio-economic justice, and national development.
Makhubele’s Extensive Experience and Leadership
Makhubele brings a wealth of experience to her new role in Parliament.
An MBA graduate and accomplished public servant, she has held various key positions throughout her career.
These include serving as the speaker of the council in Johannesburg, chair of chairs at the City of Johannesburg, and chairperson of the Metropolitan Trading Company.
She has also served as a non-executive director and chair of the South African Post Office (SAPO).
According to Ndhlela, Makhubele’s extensive background aligns with the MK Party’s vision of people-centered development and transformative change, emphasizing the need for effective governance.
Nchabeleng’s Role in MK Party and His Contributions
In addition to Makhubele, Adil Nchabeleng, a prince of the Pedi tribe, will also be sworn into Parliament.
Nchabeleng is recognized as an expert in energy, project management, ICT, entrepreneurship, investment banking, and more.
His leadership in the MK Party’s economic transformation committee and his role in Transform RSA underscore his focus on socio-economic reforms and sustainable development.
Ndhlela highlighted Nchabeleng’s contributions to the MK Party, noting that his expertise positions him as a key figure in driving the party’s economic vision.
Makhubele Describes Her Move as God’s Will
Reflecting on her decision to join the MK Party, Makhubele described it as a spiritual journey.
In September 2024, she posted on X, stating that it was “God’s will” for her to join the party, where she discovered the depth of love and reconnected with her values.
She shared her personal journey of self-discovery, noting that she is neither a saint nor a devil but simply a bundle of capabilities in the hands of God.
Her post included a call to prayer for the country and the MK Party, showing her deep connection to her new political home.
