Mark Hackett, the chief executive of Swansea Bay University Health Board, has revealed that he will step down from his position after serving nearly two-and-a-half years.

Hackett joined the health board in January 2021, during the initial wave of the Covid pandemic, and will officially depart at the end of August.
Hackett has been recognized for his role in implementing a reconfiguration of health services, a key aspect of which involves establishing “centres of excellence” at Morriston Hospital, Singleton Hospital, and Neath Port Talbot Hospital.
Morriston Hospital will now focus on urgent and emergency care, complex care, specialist care, and regional surgery.
Singleton Hospital will specialize in planned healthcare, women’s health, cancer care, and diagnostic tests.
Neath Port Talbot Hospital will serve as a center for orthopedic and spinal care, with a focus on rehabilitation and day surgery, among other services.
Neath Port Talbot Hospital is set to open three new operating theaters next month, following a £6.1 million investment.

There are also plans for additional theater capacity at Singleton Hospital.
In a statement, Mr. Hackett expressed his admiration for the people, patients, and staff he has worked with during his time in Swansea Bay.
No specific reason was given for his departure, but it is understood that he cited family reasons in a message to all staff.
With over 20 years of experience as an NHS chief executive, as well as leadership roles in the NHS in England and healthcare consultancy, Mr. Hackett brought a wealth of expertise to his position.
According to health board accounts, his remuneration for 2022-23 was £228,000.
His chief executive’s reports at health board meetings were known for their comprehensive and candid nature.
Speaking in December, Mr. Hackett acknowledged the need for improved waiting times and expressed concern over patients awaiting orthopedic surgery.
He also highlighted the complexities surrounding discharging patients who were ready to go home but faced obstacles such as a lack of onward care options.

Mr. Hackett called for public understanding of these challenges and stressed the importance of personal responsibility for maintaining health and well-being.
Following the announcement of Hackett’s retirement, Emma Woollett, chairwoman of the health board, expressed sadness at his departure and praised his energy, enthusiasm, knowledge, and experience.
Richard Evans, the health board’s executive medical director and deputy chief executive, will assume the role of acting chief executive until a permanent replacement is found.
Dr. Evans commended Hackett’s positive impact and affirmed his commitment to continuing the direction set by Hackett in collaboration with the current high-performing team.
