Chaos in the Skies? JetBlue Flight Reports Shocking Drone Strike Just Seconds Before Landing at JFK

A JetBlue Airways flight arriving in New York experienced an unusual safety scare on Monday morning after its crew reported that the aircraft had collided with a drone while descending toward John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

The Airbus A321, operating as Flight B6948 from Las Vegas, was approaching the airport shortly after 7:15 a.m. when the incident occurred at an altitude of about 3,000 feet, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Despite the reported collision, the flight continued its approach and completed a routine landing without complications.

Pilot Alerted Air Traffic Controllers

Moments after the reported impact, the flight crew informed air traffic controllers about what had happened.

Audio recordings obtained by WABC captured the pilot calmly notifying controllers that the aircraft had struck a drone while turning toward its approach path.

The pilot explained that the object appeared to have hit the aircraft near the cockpit area but emphasized that the crew required no emergency assistance and was comfortable proceeding with the scheduled landing.

The communication reflected a controlled response from the flight crew, who continued operations without interruption.

Aircraft Inspection Finds No Evidence of Damage

Following its arrival at JFK, passengers disembarked normally while the aircraft underwent a thorough inspection.

According to the FAA, investigators found no visible damage or evidence confirming that the aircraft had been struck.

JetBlue also removed the plane from service temporarily for additional checks before returning it to normal operations.

A spokesperson for the airline said customer safety remained its highest priority, noting that the aircraft landed safely, passengers exited as expected, and post-flight inspections revealed no signs of impact or structural damage.

JetBlue also pledged full cooperation with any investigation conducted by federal authorities.

Federal Authorities Launch Investigation

Although inspectors did not discover physical evidence of a collision, the FAA confirmed it is investigating the crew’s report to determine exactly what occurred during the aircraft’s descent.

Investigators are expected to examine radar information, flight data, and any available drone activity in the area to establish whether an unmanned aircraft was operating illegally near the airport.

Officials are also seeking to identify who may have been responsible if a drone was indeed involved.

Drone Encounters Becoming an Increasing Concern

The reported incident comes just days after another close call involving a commercial airliner.

Last week, a United Airlines flight approaching Newark Liberty International Airport reportedly came within approximately 100 feet of a drone during its descent, highlighting growing concerns about unauthorized drone activity around major airports.

The FAA has repeatedly warned recreational and commercial drone operators against flying in restricted airspace, particularly near busy airports where aircraft are taking off or landing.

According to the agency, more than 100 drone sightings are reported near airports every month.

Operators who violate federal airspace regulations can face substantial financial penalties as well as potential criminal prosecution.

Renewed Focus on Airport Airspace Safety

Monday’s reported drone encounter adds to mounting concerns over the risks posed by unmanned aircraft operating near heavily trafficked airports, especially in the congested airspace surrounding New York City.

While passengers aboard the JetBlue flight reached their destination safely and no damage was detected, federal investigators will now work to determine whether a drone entered restricted airspace and, if so, who was responsible for operating it near one of the busiest aviation hubs in the United States.
