Brighton midfielder Diego Gomez produced a remarkable long-range strike against Crystal Palace, scoring from 51 yards in a performance that helped his side establish a commanding first-half lead in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old Paraguay international collected the ball inside his own half, turned towards goal and unleashed a right-footed shot from around the halfway line. Crystal Palace goalkeeper Walter Benitez was unable to stop the effort as the ball flew into the net.

The goal drew comparisons with David Beckham’s famous long-range strike for Manchester United against Wimbledon in 1996.

Brighton Race Into Three-Goal Lead

Gomez’s spectacular effort came during a dominant opening period for Brighton, who had already taken the lead through an own goal by Jaydee Canvot in the fourth minute.

Yasin Ayari added another goal by the 10th minute as Brighton quickly moved three goals ahead of their opponents.

The performance put Brighton in a strong position to secure a victory that would lift them to second place in the Premier League table, behind Manchester City.

Former Inter Miami Player Recreates Beckham Magic

Gomez’s strike carried an additional connection to Beckham because the Brighton midfielder previously played for Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer club co-owned by the former England captain.

Beckham famously scored from approximately 60 yards against Wimbledon in 1996 while playing for Manchester United, making the goal one of the most memorable moments of his career.

Gomez’s effort also attracted attention in the United States, where Beckham and his wife, Victoria, own a waterfront property in Miami.

Sky Sports commentator Bill Leslie praised the Brighton midfielder’s achievement, describing the strike as a goal that supporters would remember.

He said the effort had appeared almost impossible before becoming a reality for Brighton.

Benitez Left Helpless as Brighton Celebrate

Palace goalkeeper Benitez was beaten by the power and distance of Gomez’s shot as the Brighton players celebrated the midfielder’s achievement.

Gomez encouraged the home crowd before kissing the badge on his shirt, marking the moment with the Brighton supporters.

His strike was reported as the longest-range Premier League goal since Wayne Rooney scored from 58 yards for Everton against West Ham United in November 2017.

Rooney’s effort came during a 4-0 Everton victory in which the former England captain scored a hat-trick.

Gomez Continues to Establish Himself at Brighton

Gomez has become an important member of Brighton’s squad since making his debut for the club in January 2025.

The midfielder scored 10 goals in all competitions last season, contributing to the team’s performances across the campaign.

Although primarily a box-to-box midfielder rather than an attacking player known for individual flair, Gomez has developed a reputation as an influential performer for the club.

His previous experience alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Inter Miami also forms part of his footballing background.

Paraguay International Builds on World Cup Success

Gomez has also played an important role for Paraguay at international level, helping the national team reach the last 16 of the World Cup over the summer.

His performances for club and country have established him as a significant player for Paraguay, while his spectacular goal against Crystal Palace provided another memorable moment in his Brighton career.
