An eight-year-old boy has died after drowning at Camps Bay in Cape Town, with the tragedy occurring on Monday, 5 October, as families marked the final day of the third-term school holidays.

The incident adds to a series of recent drowning emergencies along South Africa’s coastline, with rescue teams also searching for three teenage boys who are feared to have been swept out to sea in separate incidents.

Child Drowns While Swimming at Tidal Pool

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) confirmed that the young boy drowned while swimming at the Camps Bay tidal pool.

The City of Cape Town’s water rescue network was activated after the emergency was reported, bringing several rescue and medical teams to the scene.

NSRI Bakoven crew members responded alongside Clifton Surf Lifesaving lifeguards, City of Cape Town lifeguards, ambulance personnel, law enforcement officers and members of the Camps Bay City Improvement District.

Extensive Resuscitation Efforts Fail

Emergency responders carried out advanced life support CPR in an attempt to save the child.

Despite the extensive efforts by rescuers and medical personnel, the boy could not be revived and was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

NSRI said the child was believed to be a foreign national living in Cape Town and had been visiting the tidal pool with members of his family.

Police have opened an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.

Three Teenage Boys Still Missing at Sea

The latest tragedy comes as rescue teams continue searching for three teenage boys who are presumed to have drowned in separate incidents involving strong rip currents.

The incidents have occurred at beaches in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape during the school holiday period, highlighting the dangers posed by powerful surf conditions.

19-Year-Old Swept Away at Mtunzini

Among those still missing is 19-year-old Jonathan Bradfield, an Eastern Cape matric learner who was swept out to sea while swimming at Mtunzini Main Beach last Thursday.

Bradfield had travelled to KwaZulu-Natal with his girlfriend and her family when he entered the surf zone.

Despite ongoing search and rescue operations, his body has not yet been recovered.

16-Year-Old Disappears at Cape Vidal

A second teenager, a 16-year-old learner from Mtubatuba, went missing while swimming at Cape Vidal Beach on Saturday.

The teenager had reportedly entered the water with a 14-year-old boy when both were caught in rip currents.

The younger boy was subsequently rescued, but the 16-year-old remained missing, prompting continued search operations.

Glen Beach Teen Also Presumed Drowned

A third teenager, an 18-year-old from Mfuleni, is also feared to have drowned after disappearing in the surf at Glen Beach in Camps Bay over the weekend.

His disappearance occurred in the same coastal area where the eight-year-old boy later drowned, although the incidents were separate.

Rescue teams have continued efforts to locate the missing teenager.

String of Incidents Raises Holiday Safety Concerns

The deaths and disappearances come during a period when beaches across the country have experienced increased activity as families take advantage of the school holidays.

The separate incidents have also highlighted the dangers associated with rip currents, which can quickly pull swimmers away from the shore even when sea conditions appear manageable.

With the school holidays now over, authorities and rescue organisations continue to urge members of the public to exercise caution around the water and to follow lifeguard instructions.

For the families involved, however, the holiday period has ended in tragedy, with one child’s death confirmed and three teenage boys still missing.
