A major search operation is underway at Cape Vidal Beach in northern KwaZulu-Natal after a 16-year-old boy was swept into the surf by a rip current on Saturday afternoon.
The teenager had been swimming with a 14-year-old friend when both boys got into difficulty in the water.
Despite an extensive search by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), there has so far been no sign of the missing teenager.
Friend Rescued by Holidaymaker
The 14-year-old boy survived after a woman who was visiting the area from Benoni entered the water to help the two teenagers.
The Good Samaritan managed to bring the younger boy safely back to the beach before emergency crews arrived.
NSRI St Lucia station commander Melinda Snyman said the rescue operation was launched after the organisation received reports of two teenagers in distress in the surf zone.
NSRI Launches Immediate Search
NSRI St Lucia’s duty crew were activated at 15:07 after reports of a drowning in progress.
Rescue swimmers were sent directly to the scene, while an NSRI rescue vehicle towing the JetRIB rescue craft Rescue 40 Bravo also made its way to the beach.
Once on scene, rescuers launched the craft and began searching the water and surrounding shoreline for the 16-year-old.
The operation continued both inside and beyond the surf zone, but no trace of the teenager was found.
Rescued Teen Taken to Hospital
NSRI medics treated the 14-year-old at the scene after he displayed symptoms consistent with a non-fatal drowning.
He was subsequently handed over to SISILA EMS paramedics and transported to hospital by ambulance.
The teenager was reported to be in a stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
Boys Were Visiting Cape Vidal With Family
The two teenagers are understood to be locals from Mtubatuba who were visiting Cape Vidal Beach with their families.
They were friends and had been swimming together when they were apparently caught in rip currents.
Cape Vidal is located north of St Lucia within the broader iSimangaliso Wetland Park area.
Police and Rangers Join Search
The search for the missing teenager has continued with assistance from several emergency and law-enforcement agencies.
Police Search and Rescue, including the Water Policing and Diving Service, is involved in the operation.
iSimangaliso Wetland Park rangers are also assisting with the ongoing search along the coastline.
Police have opened an investigation into the incident as authorities continue efforts to locate the teenager.
Rip Currents Pose Serious Beach Danger
The incident has once again highlighted the danger posed by rip currents, which can quickly pull swimmers away from the shoreline.
The NSRI routinely warns beachgoers to remain alert to changing sea conditions and to use designated swimming areas where lifeguards are present.
Anyone caught in a rip current should try to remain calm and avoid attempting to swim directly against the current. Instead, swimmers should conserve their energy and seek help while moving parallel to the shoreline when possible.
Search Continues for the Missing Teenager
For the teenager’s family and friends, the search remains the immediate priority.
Emergency teams are continuing their efforts along the water and shoreline as authorities work to establish exactly what happened.
The 14-year-old’s survival after being rescued by the holidaymaker provides one positive development in an otherwise devastating incident, but the search for his 16-year-old friend remains ongoing.
