Cameroon’s AFCON Prospects Brighten with Aboubakar and Njie’s Return

In a significant boost to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon ahead of their 2023 AFCON round of 16 clash against the Super Eagles of Nigeria, talismanic striker Vincent Aboubakar and Clinton Njie have returned to the squad.

The duo, sidelined during the group stage due to fitness issues, is expected to play crucial roles in Cameroon’s campaign.

Coach Song’s Decision to Retain Injured Stars Pays Off

Despite their absence in the group stage, coach Rigobert Song opted to retain Aboubakar and Njie in the squad, recognizing their importance.

The decision proved wise as both players, integral to Cameroon’s 2017 AFCON-winning squad, are now available for the remainder of the competition.

Official Announcement of the Return

The Cameroonian Football Federation officially announced the return of Vincent Aboubakar and Clinton Njie via its Facebook page, stating, “The return to collective training of Vincent Aboubakar and Clinton Njie, now available for the rest of the competition.”

Notable Past Performances Against Nigeria

Both Aboubakar and Njie have a history of impactful performances against Nigeria. Njie, who plays for Süper Lig club Sivasspor, scored Cameroon’s second goal in the 2019 AFCON, contributing to a 3-2 victory for the Eagles.

Aboubakar, representing Süper Lig club Beşiktaş, scored in a 2017 World Cup qualifier, securing a 1-1 draw.

Super Eagles Unfazed by Return, Boast Strong Defense

While the return of the veteran forwards adds depth to Cameroon’s attack, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, with one of the best defenses in the 2023 AFCON, remain confident.

Nigeria has conceded just one goal in three matches, setting the stage for an intense round of 16 clash scheduled for Saturday, January 27, at 9 p.m.
