Authorities in Modesto, California, are investigating a triple homicide involving a young mother, her infant son, and the child’s grandmother in what police describe as a brutal stabbing incident that shocked the residential community east of San Francisco.
The Modesto Police Department said officers were dispatched on the morning of May 28 after a 911 call reported a violent situation inside a home.
When they arrived, they discovered a scene involving multiple victims with fatal stab wounds.
Victims Identified, Including Infant Child
Police confirmed the deaths of 23-year-old Fabiola Gonzalez-Nunez and her mother, 54-year-old Maria Sylvia Nunez-Villalobos.
The two-week-old infant, Mateo Gonzalez, was also found suffering from stab wounds and later died after being transported to a hospital.
A third child, a three-year-old, was discovered inside the residence alive.
The child was taken for medical evaluation and subsequently placed under the care of Child Protective Services.
Family members later described the victims in emotional tributes, remembering the grandmother as deeply devoted to her family, the young mother as loving and committed to her children, and the infant as a joyful presence whose life was tragically cut short.
Suspect Arrested After Search Operation
Investigators identified the suspect as 28-year-old Joaquin Escoto, who police say was believed to have been living at the residence and was in a relationship with Gonzalez-Nunez.
Authorities also believe he was the father of both the infant and the surviving toddler.
Following the discovery of the crime scene, law enforcement officials quickly established a perimeter after determining the suspect may still have been nearby.
The Modesto Police Department deployed multiple units, including its SWAT team, investigations division, and hostage negotiation personnel.
A nearby elementary school was temporarily placed on lockdown as a precaution, with students later relocated to a high school for safe reunification with families.
Escoto was eventually located hiding in a nearby residence and taken into custody without incident.
Charges Filed in Triple Homicide Case
Escoto has been charged with three counts of murder, along with enhancements for multiple victims and the use of a deadly weapon.
Additional charges include willful child cruelty and outstanding warrants related to a prior DUI case.
He is currently being held at the Stanislaus County Jail without bond.
Court proceedings related to the DUI charge were scheduled, while hearings for the homicide and child cruelty charges have not yet been set, according to jail records.
Prior Deportations and Immigration Debate Reignited
According to a senior law enforcement official cited in reports, Escoto had previously been deported from the United States on three separate occasions.
The same source claimed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement had sought to remove him again following a DUI arrest last year.
However, the official stated that the request was not carried out due to California’s sanctuary policies, and Escoto was subsequently released from custody.
Those claims have intensified political debate, with critics arguing that sanctuary laws can complicate federal immigration enforcement.
Supporters of such policies, however, maintain they are designed to limit local involvement in federal immigration actions and encourage community trust in law enforcement.
Community Grieves as Fundraising Efforts Begin
In the aftermath of the killings, family members and community supporters have launched a fundraising campaign to help cover funeral costs and counseling services.
Messages shared by relatives described the victims as deeply loved and irreplaceable, emphasizing the grandmother’s devotion, the mother’s dedication to her children, and the infant’s brief but cherished life.
The fundraiser has drawn widespread attention as the Modesto community continues to grapple with the scale of the tragedy and the circumstances surrounding it.
Investigation Continues as Authorities Review Case Details
Law enforcement officials have not released additional details about the motive behind the attack, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Police have also not confirmed whether further charges may be filed as forensic analysis and witness interviews continue.
Authorities say they are working to piece together the events leading up to the killings while ensuring support is provided to the surviving child and extended family members affected by the incident.
