When Bryson DeChambeau clinched the US Open title last month, Rory McIlroy’s reaction was a bit unexpected.
The Northern Irish golfer, who had been leading the tournament, faltered towards the end, missing crucial putts and ultimately letting DeChambeau take the crown.
McIlroy’s performance was disappointing, and he left the scene quickly without acknowledging DeChambeau’s victory.
After the dramatic finish, McIlroy was spotted by golf reporter Jason Sobel packing his bags and heading out, seemingly avoiding any media interactions.
He took a break for three weeks to regroup and prepare for the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.
A Chance Meeting
Fast forward to this week, DeChambeau and McIlroy crossed paths again on the practice range at Royal Troon. This time, McIlroy extended his congratulations to DeChambeau.
DeChambeau shared that their interaction was positive, saying, “I said hello to him yesterday, and we talked. He said congrats.
So everything’s great there.”
Looking Ahead
DeChambeau praised McIlroy as a fierce competitor and expressed excitement for their continued rivalry. “I know he’s going to give the fans everything he’s got this week, and I’ll be doing the same.
Hopefully, it will be another good battle.”
McIlroy’s Reflections
In response to the media speculation about his post-US Open silence, McIlroy explained, “Maybe the one drawback from me not talking afterwards was that it led to three weeks of speculation.”
He added that he trusts his support system and believes that if the tournament had ended after 68 holes, opinions might have been different
