What started as a family holiday in Dubai turned into an unimaginable ordeal for 18-year-old Marcus Fakana.
The construction apprentice from Tottenham, north London, was sentenced to a year in one of Dubai’s most notorious prisons after a holiday romance with a 17-year-old girl led to allegations under the UAE’s strict morality laws.
The girl, also from London, has since turned 18, but the repercussions for Fakana have been devastating.
The Sentence and the Hellish Conditions Awaiting Marcus
Marcus will serve his time in Al-Awir Central Prison, a high-security facility infamous for housing death row inmates, violent criminals, and those convicted of terrorism.
The conditions in the prison are harrowing—cells designed for three or four people are often crammed with up to 20 inmates, forcing many to sleep on the floor.
Reports from former inmates paint a grim picture of overcrowding, rampant violence, and lack of medical care.
Temperatures in the summer can soar to 50 degrees Celsius, making the desert prison a living hell.

Calls for Action and Government Inaction
Marcus’s plight has drawn criticism from human rights groups and activists, who accuse the British government of failing to intervene effectively.
Radha Stirling, founder of Detained in Dubai, has been outspoken about the case, calling the sentence “an utter disgrace” and criticizing British leaders for prioritizing trade relations over citizens’ welfare.
The incident stemmed from a complaint by the girl’s mother, who discovered the relationship after checking her daughter’s phone.
Under UAE law, only individuals over 18 can legally engage in such relationships, even though the same act would not be considered a crime in the UK.
