Nathan Hageman, once the lucky winner of £1 million on the popular Ant and Dec TV show Red or Black?, has found himself in trouble once again.
This time, the 44-year-old bricklayer stole a nurse’s handbag while she was working an overnight shift in the intensive care unit at Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.
The Incident: Stealing From a Nurse on Duty
Hageman took Samita Gurung’s handbag from her locker while she cared for patients, then met two accomplices before fleeing the hospital car park with her Ford Echo Sport.
Despite his past fortune, Hageman had fallen on hard times, having spent all his winnings on a lavish lifestyle filled with fast cars and expensive holidays.
His financial downfall led him to theft, a crime he would eventually regret.
A Pattern of Crime
This wasn’t Hageman’s first brush with the law. In fact, he had served time on two separate occasions.
In 2014, he was jailed for sending over 400 threatening messages to a woman, and in 2006, he had assaulted an ex-partner.
His latest offense, however, brought him back to court after he had already spent six months in custody for theft and taking a vehicle without permission last April.
The 12-week prison sentence handed to him was overshadowed by the fact that he had already served time in jail.
Impact on the Victim: A Nurse’s Devastation
Ms. Gurung, a hardworking ICU nurse, was devastated to find her belongings gone on April 22.
In her victim impact statement, she shared the frustration of struggling to make ends meet.
“As a nurse working in the NHS, we only get so much. I couldn’t afford to pay all my bills that month,” she expressed.
She had looked forward to relaxing on her birthday week, but Hageman’s crime ruined her plans.
Court Proceedings: A Remorseful Criminal
When the case reached Reading Crown Court, CCTV footage showed Hageman entering the hospital around 10 pm.
Although he claimed he found the bag and simply took it with him, the judge wasn’t convinced.
Hageman, arrested alongside co-accused Justin Clift in Amersham, appeared via video link from HMP Wormwood Scrubs.
His defense lawyer, Gabriella Lewis, painted a picture of a man who had spiraled due to drug addiction but was now “extremely remorseful” for his actions.
The Judge’s Verdict
Mr. Recorder Broe made it clear that the nurse, Ms. Gurung, deserved to feel safe at work.
“Your victim was a nurse performing a vital public service. She should be able to feel safe when doing so. I doubt that you gave her a thought,” he told Hageman and Clift.
Both men received sentences, though Hageman walked free due to time already served.
Despite a previous life of luxury, Nathan Hageman’s decisions have led him down a path of crime, leaving behind a trail of regret and disappointment.
