Lake Travis High School in Texas is grieving the loss of senior football player Odin Hensley, who died Wednesday night after suffering a cardiac arrest during a team practice earlier in the week.

Hensley, a member of the Lake Travis varsity football team, experienced the medical emergency Monday morning.

He was immediately treated at the scene by first responders before being airlifted to Dell Children’s Medical Center in critical condition.

Emergency Response Unfolded on the Practice Field

The teenager was transported by Travis County STAR Flight after emergency personnel began life-saving treatment at the school.

Greg Gold, a Lake Travis parent who said he witnessed the incident, later praised the response of the school’s coaches, athletic trainers and emergency medical professionals.

Gold said those caring for the students remained calm and organized despite the seriousness of the situation, while coaches worked to move other players away from the scene and prevent further distress.

He described the response as a powerful example of the preparation and professionalism of those responsible for the safety of students.

Hensley Remained in Intensive Care

Doctors monitored Hensley in an intensive care unit for several days as his family and members of the Lake Travis community hoped for his recovery.

His uncle later confirmed that Hensley died Wednesday night.

The devastating news was formally shared with Lake Travis ISD families and staff Thursday by Superintendent Curtis Null.

“It is with profound sadness that we share that Lake Travis High School senior Odin Hensley has passed away as a result of complications from a medical emergency,” Null said in a letter.

School Community Comes Together in Grief

Null urged students, staff and members of the wider school community to support Hensley’s loved ones during the difficult period.

He specifically asked the community to keep Hensley’s family, teammates, classmates, coaches, athletic trainers and teachers in their thoughts and prayers.

Tributes have since emerged from people who knew the teenager, with friends, teammates and school staff remembering him as a determined young man who was valued by those around him.

The loss has left the Lake Travis football program facing an especially painful moment as players and coaches process the death of one of their teammates.

Fundraising Campaign Raises Significant Support

A GoFundMe campaign established to assist Hensley’s family has raised more than $150,000, according to the fundraising page at the time of writing.

The campaign was created to help with medical expenses, rehabilitation costs and lost income while Hensley’s parents remained focused on their son.

The appeal emphasized that the family should not have to worry about financial pressures while dealing with the devastating medical crisis.

Although Hensley has now died, the fundraising effort reflects the scale of support surrounding his family during the tragedy.

First Responders Receive Praise

Gold’s account also highlighted the efforts made by those who responded to Hensley’s collapse.

He praised the Lake Travis coaching and medical teams for immediately focusing on the teenager while also managing the other players and keeping the situation as controlled as possible.

His comments underscored the importance of emergency preparedness at school sporting events, particularly when dealing with a sudden medical crisis involving a young athlete.

For the Lake Travis community, however, the professional response could not change the heartbreaking outcome.

A Community Left to Remember a Young Athlete

Hensley’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the school community, with those closest to him now remembering his contribution to the football team and the relationships he built during his time at Lake Travis High School.

His family, teammates, coaches and classmates are now facing the difficult days ahead without the senior they had hoped to see complete his high school football journey.

The tragedy has brought the Lake Travis community together in mourning as it remembers a young player whose life was cut short following a sudden medical emergency.
