Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has weighed in on the team’s recent streak of inconsistent performances.
Since their campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, questions have arisen regarding the team’s form, especially after several drawn matches.
However, Broos remains confident and dismisses any claims that the team’s quality has dipped.
Tough Opponents, Not a Dip in Form
Broos pointed out that while Bafana Bafana has drawn four of their last five matches, including a surprising tie against Andorra, a nation ranked 164th in FIFA’s world rankings, these results don’t signal a downturn.
He explained that the team has faced stiff competition, with matches being far from easy.
In fact, their only win during this period came in a World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe, but Broos insists that even the drawn matches were against formidable teams.
Looking ahead to their upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifier against South Sudan, Broos emphasized that the team has been thoroughly tested, and these games were more than just routine fixtures.
Upcoming Showdown with South Sudan
Bafana Bafana is now gearing up for their next challenge: an AFCON qualifier against South Sudan, set to kick off at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, 10 September.
The match will take place at the recently renovated Juba National Stadium.
This follows Bafana’s 2-2 draw against Uganda at Orlando Stadium just last Friday in their first match of the qualification campaign.
Hugo Broos Defends the Team’s Performance
Addressing concerns over the string of drawn matches, Broos defended the team’s efforts.
“You have to consider who we played against.
These weren’t weak teams.
We faced some of the strongest teams in Africa,” he explained, mentioning powerhouses like Nigeria and Algeria.
According to Broos, these top-10 ranked African teams posed significant challenges, especially since Bafana Bafana played away from home.
He believes the results were expected and don’t reflect a lack of quality on the South African side.
Bafana Bafana is Not to Be Underestimated
Broos is adamant that Bafana Bafana remains a strong and competitive team.
“We played very well against Algeria and Nigeria, and even our match against Andorra was more of a training exercise, as we used a second team,” he noted.
Despite their draw against Uganda, Broos believes the true test of Uganda’s strength will come in future matches.
The coach remains confident in the abilities of his squad, praising their power, dedication, and overall performance on the field.
“This is not a weak team,” he said firmly, emphasizing that Bafana Bafana is still a force to be reckoned with.
What’s Next for Bafana Bafana?
With their next AFCON qualifier looming, all eyes will be on Bafana Bafana as they take on South Sudan.
Fans and analysts alike will be keen to see if Broos’ confidence is well-founded and whether the team can secure a crucial win.
