APC Lawmakers Break Ranks, Reject Party’s Preferred Speaker Candidate

…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. A group of All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers has chosen to reject the party’s favored candidate for the position of 10th House of Representatives speaker.

Instead, they have thrown their support behind Hon. Mukhtar Aliyu Betara as their preferred candidate, diverging from the ruling party’s endorsement.

Upholding Democracy and National Interest

The lawmakers, under the umbrella of the Progressive Support Group, have voiced their concerns about the imposition of leadership positions within the party.

They emphasize the importance of safeguarding democracy and ensuring that the parliament fulfills its role of representing the interests of the electorate.

Their spokesperson urged fellow colleagues to prioritize the national interest and the well-being of Nigeria above any political group or individual.

Opposition to External Forces and Manipulation

The Betara camp strongly criticized the APC’s endorsement of another candidate, viewing it as an attempt by external forces to exert control over the House in the upcoming political dispensation.

The Progressive Support Group alleges that some self-centered individuals are plotting to manipulate the system for personal gains, contrary to the aspirations of Nigerians for transparency, accountability, and fairness in governance.

Call for Support and Qualities of Hon. Mukhtar Aliyu Betara

In light of their concerns, the Progressive Support Group called upon members-elect to rally behind Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, who represents Biu/Bayo/Shani Federal Constituency of Borno State, for the position of Speaker in the 10th National Assembly.

They emphasized Betara’s neutrality, humility, and track record of exemplary performance, including his dedication to delivering on constituency projects and sponsoring community-compatible bills.

The rejection of the party’s favored candidate by a group of APC lawmakers reflects a divergence of opinions within the party.

As the 10th National Assembly approaches its inauguration, the Progressive Support Group appeals for a leadership selection process that upholds democracy, respects the national interest, and prioritizes the well-being of the Nigerian people.
