A tragic scene unfolded in southeast London on Remembrance Sunday, where a 66-year-old man, identified as Musse Ali, allegedly carried out a brutal stabbing spree that left one man dead and two others seriously injured.
This violent incident took place in a bustling market in Walworth, just before the two-minute silence marking Remembrance Day. Ali is now in custody, facing serious charges.
Victim Identified and Injured Survivors Named
The man who lost his life in the attack was Hilkiah McLeggan, a resident of Southwark, who succumbed to a fatal stab wound to his back.
Authorities have also named the two survivors, Ho Man Yau and Baheru Nadew Bartura, who remain hospitalized with what officials describe as “serious” injuries.
Their conditions, though not detailed, are significant enough to warrant close medical attention.
Court Appearance and Charges
Ali has been formally charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of a bladed article.
Appearing before Croydon Magistrates’ Court with the aid of an interpreter, he did not attend today’s session at the Old Bailey.
Prosecutor Danny Robinson presented the court with evidence from CCTV footage showing Ali entering a shop around 10:30 a.m., attempting to steal an item, and subsequently being pushed outside by the shopkeeper.
Following this, Ali allegedly brandished a kitchen knife, stabbing three men in quick succession before being detained by nearby shopkeepers.
Upcoming Court Dates and Security Measures in the Area
Judge Sarah Whitehouse, KC, has ordered Ali to remain in custody, with a plea and trial preparation hearing scheduled for February 3.
The trial is provisionally set for September 22 next year.
Meanwhile, authorities have increased police presence in Southwark to provide reassurance to local residents and businesses.
Police Response to Public Concerns
Following the incident, rumors circulated on social media, suggesting a potential link to terrorism.
Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, head of policing in Southwark, addressed these concerns, clarifying that their investigation has found no connection to terrorism and urging the public to avoid speculative assumptions.
