After a whirlwind year pursuing his dream of playing in the NFL, Louis Rees-Zammit finds himself at a crossroads.
The former Wales and Gloucester rugby star, who took a bold leap into American football in 2024, is now a free agent, leaving fans wondering if he might return to the sport where he first made his name.
Rees-Zammit, 23, made headlines when he left rugby to join the NFL’s International Player Pathway program, signing with the Kansas City Chiefs before moving to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
However, with no current contract in place, his next steps remain uncertain.
Gatland’s Open Invitation to Return
As speculation about Rees-Zammit’s future grows, Wales head coach Warren Gatland has made it clear that the door is always open for the talented wing to return to rugby.
“We’d love to have him back if he’s available,” Gatland said, expressing confidence that Rees-Zammit would seamlessly reintegrate into the squad if he chose to return.
Despite Rees-Zammit’s limited time away from rugby—just 12 months—Gatland understands the pull of following one’s dreams.
“When you make a big decision like that, is a year enough to say you’ve given it your all? That’s something only he can answer,” Gatland added.
A Challenging Year in the NFL
Rees-Zammit’s transition to American football hasn’t been without its challenges.
He has yet to make a senior NFL appearance, and the brutal nature of the sport has been an eye-opener.
“He’s said himself that American sports can be ruthless—you get a call, and it’s ‘see you later,’” Gatland noted, acknowledging how this experience could shape Rees-Zammit’s perspective, both personally and professionally.
MailSport reports that Jacksonville has offered him a deal for the next season, but Rees-Zammit has yet to decide whether to continue his American adventure or return to rugby.
Wales Could Benefit from His Return
If Rees-Zammit were to return to rugby, his presence would undoubtedly strengthen a struggling Wales side that has faced 12 consecutive Test defeats.
His record of 14 tries in 32 rugby Tests before his NFL switch demonstrates his impact on the field.
For now, Rees-Zammit’s immediate plans remain unclear.
The young star recently took some time off, vacationing in Asia, as he considers his options.
A Bright Future, Regardless of the Path
Whether Rees-Zammit continues to chase his NFL dream or returns to rugby, Gatland believes his experience in the United States will only benefit him in the long run
“From a growth point of view, it will give him a different perspective,” the coach said.
Rees-Zammit’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable, and fans of both sports are eager to see where his path leads next.
One thing is certain: his talent and determination will make him a valuable asset, no matter the field.
