Carrie Johnson, the wife of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, recently shared a heartfelt update about her health battle.
After enduring nearly three weeks of illness, she revealed that she spent the first days of 2025 in the hospital battling flu and pneumonia.
In an emotional Instagram post, Carrie shared a photo of herself in a hospital bed, describing her experience of struggling to breathe due to a severe chest infection that lasted for 18 days.
A Grateful Tribute to the NHS
While reflecting on her hospital stay at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxfordshire, Carrie expressed deep gratitude towards the NHS staff who took care of her during her recovery.
She praised the doctors and nurses, calling them “the best people on earth” for their unwavering support.
“They’ve looked after me and my family when we’ve needed it most, and I will never not be enormously grateful,” she shared.
She also recalled a touching moment when one of the nurses serenaded her by her bedside when she was feeling particularly low.
The Importance of the Flu Jab
In her post, Carrie also took the opportunity to encourage others to get the flu jab, sharing that she regretted not getting vaccinated this year.
“It totally slipped my mind,” she admitted, adding that while there’s no guarantee it would have prevented her illness, she believes it could have made a difference.
Carrie urged others not to make the same mistake, reflecting on how much better things might have been had she been vaccinated.
Family’s Support and the Ongoing Crisis
Along with her personal update, Carrie posted a second image of some sentimental items: her children Wilfred and Romy’s favorite toys.
A green dinosaur named “Greenie” and a heart-shaped princess key ring were her children’s way of keeping her close while she was in the hospital.
“Health and family are everything,” she said, emphasizing the importance of these values.
This update comes at a time when England’s emergency services are facing overwhelming pressure.
With flu cases rising rapidly, A&E visits have surged, and ambulance teams are responding to record-breaking numbers of incidents.
Experts are concerned that the UK’s ongoing cold spell will only worsen the strain on hospitals.
A Critical Situation for Emergency Services
The strain on the healthcare system has led to a dozen hospitals declaring critical incidents, as they struggle to provide safe care amidst rising flu admissions.
Surveillance data suggests that hospital admissions for flu have increased significantly, with a nearly five-fold rise since early December.
The crisis is compounded by the cold weather, which continues to add pressure to an already stretched system.
In response, the UK Health Security Agency has extended its “amber” cold-health alert, signaling a continued risk to health until January 12.
