13-Year-Old Boy Survives Deadly Boating Accident in Bodega Bay After Father’s Heroic Act to Save Him

13-Year-Old Boy Survives Deadly Boating Accident in Bodega Bay After Father’s Heroic Act to Save Him

On November 2, a heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded on the waters of Bodega Bay, California.

A 13-year-old boy, Jude Khamnoungkhoune, was the sole survivor of a fatal boating accident that claimed the lives of his father and family members.

The incident has left Jude with a lifetime of memories and an immense sense of loss.

A Family Outing Turns to Disaster

Jude, his father Prasong, and a few family members, including his cousins and uncle, went out on the water for a crabbing trip that would soon turn into a nightmare.

The Khamnoungkhoune family, from San Jose, had always enjoyed fishing, with Prasong—a lifelong fisherman—sharing his passion with Jude from a young age.

Tragically, the calm waters they set out on quickly turned rough, and soon the boat was overwhelmed by massive waves.

As the boat flooded and began to sink, the passengers were forced into the cold, violent sea.

In a final act of love and bravery, Prasong managed to push Jude away from the wreck, guiding him to safety on a cooler that had broken loose from the boat.

This heroic act mirrored a scene many recall from the film Titanic, where Jack sacrifices himself to keep Rose alive.

Struggling to Survive

The waves, which were reportedly at least 14 feet tall, continued to crash around Jude as he struggled to stay afloat.

“I was just thinking about whether I’d make it to see my family again, or even survive the night,” Jude shared with KRON 4.

Despite the intense turmoil of the moment, Jude eventually washed ashore, cold and exhausted, but alive.

Search teams were dispatched to locate the other passengers, but after a day of intense efforts, only one body was recovered.

The rest of the family, including Prasong, remained missing.

In the wake of the tragedy, Jude has shown incredible resilience, focusing on staying strong for his family and his future.

A Family Left Behind

Jude is now living with his mother Yathida and his aunt Shanice.

Prasong’s unexpected death has left behind a deep void for his young children and his wife.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family during this difficult time, with Prasong’s nephew, Kyle Souvanhnaboupha, describing him as a “rock” in their lives—someone who always raised them with love, laughter, and wisdom.

Prasong had a special bond with Jude, sharing the joy of fishing together since the boy was just five years old.

“My dad was a really funny guy, he had a great personality,” Jude reflected, holding onto the precious memories of their time together.

A vigil will be held in Prasong’s honor on November 16, as his family gathers to remember his legacy.

Another Family’s Tragic Loss at Sea

The sorrowful events for the Khamnoungkhoune family came just days after another boating accident in Bodega Bay.

On the same waters, an 11-year-old boy was the only survivor of a similar tragedy.

This young survivor was part of a family that had endured immense hardship before.

Just seven years earlier, his cousins had survived a mass shooting that injured several members of the Phommathep family.

In the most recent incident, the boat capsized, and the 11-year-old used a cooler to stay afloat, eventually making it to shore alone.

Miraculously, he survived the ordeal, walking up to Highway 1 the next morning, where he was found by passersby.

Both tragedies occurred during the start of Dungeness crab season, a popular time for recreational fishing in the area.

The timing of these events has added to the sense of disbelief and sadness that the community is grappling with.

Healing in the Face of Loss

Jude is now facing an uncertain future, but he remains focused on healing and honoring his father’s memory.

His story, like that of the other young survivor, is a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable loss.

For both families, the road ahead will be long, but the love and support of the community are helping them navigate through this difficult time.
