Stefano Vukov, the former coach of world No. 7 Elena Rybakina, has been banned from coaching by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) following serious allegations.
The WTA claims that Vukov violated its code of conduct, accusing him of mentally abusing the 2022 Wimbledon champion.
Despite Rybakina’s defense and Vukov’s denial of any wrongdoing, the WTA’s decision stands, resulting in a one-year suspension.
Allegations of Mental Abuse and Harassment
According to reports, Vukov’s actions led to significant tension after he was let go by Rybakina before the US Open in 2024.
After their split, the coach allegedly bombarded Rybakina with over 100 phone calls and sent countless messages.
Sources close to the situation claim that Vukov even refused to leave her hotel until he had a conversation with the player, leading her representatives to arrange security for her protection.
The WTA’s investigation highlighted claims of emotional abuse, including derogatory remarks made by Vukov, such as calling Rybakina “stupid” and “retarded” and belittling her achievements.
The situation allegedly worsened when Rybakina’s mother wrote to Vukov, asking him not to make her daughter cry, which reportedly led to his refusal to coach her at certain events.
The WTA’s Response and Rybakina’s Position
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Rybakina has publicly defended Vukov, insisting that he “never mistreated me.”
In a statement following the WTA’s decision, the player expressed disappointment at how the situation had been handled, but emphasized her focus on continuing her tournament play.
The WTA’s decision to suspend Vukov comes after months of tension, with Rybakina reportedly struggling with illness during the 2024 season, which was linked to the alleged abuse.
The governing body also raised concerns about a “toxic relationship” between the two, claiming there was evidence of a romantic involvement during the Australian Open, despite Vukov’s suspension at the time.
Vukov’s Denial and Potential Appeal
Vukov has denied all allegations of abuse, adamantly stating, “I definitely never abused anyone.”
He has expressed his intent to appeal the WTA’s ruling and is reportedly considering legal action as he continues to dispute the claims.
Vukov is currently prohibited from coaching, but he has arranged for another coach, Davide Sanguinetti, to guide Rybakina at upcoming WTA events during his suspension.
As the controversy continues, Rybakina remains focused on her game, hoping to put the off-court drama behind her and continue her pursuit of success on the court.
