Wealthy financier Daniel Burrell taken into custody on Nantucket following foreclosure of $12.5M mansion and legal troubles in Las Vegas

In a dramatic turn of events, Daniel Burrell, a well-known investor with political ties to prominent Democrats, was arrested in Massachusetts last Friday.

The arrest came just hours after one of his multi-million-dollar mansions was sold at a foreclosure auction.

This once-influential financier now faces a whirlwind of legal battles, starting with charges related to writing a bad check to a Las Vegas casino.

The Foreclosure and Arrest

Burrell, 45, was taken into custody shortly after a four-bedroom mansion he owned on Nantucket Island was auctioned for over $12 million.

Interestingly, Nantucket is also the location where Burrell was arrested for allegedly bouncing a check worth $1.5 million to a casino.

The financier reportedly owns two other properties on the island, adding to the growing list of his assets now at risk of foreclosure.

Political Connections and Financial Woes

Burrell isn’t just another businessman facing financial trouble; his ties run deep within political circles.

He served as a senior advisor to John Kerry during the 2004 presidential campaign and was even a member of President Bill Clinton’s Domestic Policy Council in the early 2000s.

But despite these high-level connections, Burrell’s financial life has crumbled.

He allegedly defaulted on more than $75 million in loans, which he used for personal expenses, including purchasing homes, a yacht, and paying off a divorce settlement.

Legal Issues Piling Up

A significant part of Burrell’s current woes stems from his mounting legal troubles.

After being arrested, he was held in Nantucket District Court, where he struggled to gather $10,000 for bail.

His Nevada attorney, Andrew Fritz, revealed that Burrell had been wanted for unpaid debts tied to casino markers in Las Vegas.

While the court had previously considered a “good faith” payment offer of $50,000, nothing materialized, leading to his arrest.

More Lawsuits and Auctioned Properties

Burrell’s legal issues are far from isolated. Multiple banks, including First Western Trust and Alpine Bank, have filed lawsuits against him for unpaid business loans.

Earlier this year, Alpine Bank initiated foreclosure proceedings on one of Burrell’s Aspen, Colorado properties after he defaulted on an $18.5 million loan.

Bank of America has also sued him for nearly $4.5 million in unpaid loans.

A Complex Financial Empire

Beyond his political advisory roles, Burrell held influential positions in various sectors.

He was once a partner at Rosemont Capital, a New York-based equity firm, and later served as CEO of Rosemont Realty.

During his tenure, he oversaw the construction of 173 office buildings across 25 states.

He also founded several osteopathic medical schools in Idaho, New Mexico, and Florida.

His business portfolio, through The Burrell Group, spans industries like education, real estate, and financial services.

Despite this, Burrell’s lavish lifestyle and risky financial moves have now put him at the center of multiple lawsuits and property foreclosures.

Family Ties and Personal Life

Burrell is a father of five children, with three from his first marriage to jewelry magnate Katherine Jetter.

Two of his children are currently in college, while the third just started school.

His other two children, from his relationship with Nikola, are still younger, with one attending boarding school in Boston.

What’s Next for Burrell?

As of now, Burrell is no longer considered a fugitive, but his legal battles are far from over.

He faces multiple lawsuits across several states, and his assets continue to be auctioned off to settle his debts.

He has been given 60 days to return to Nevada for his next court hearing, where his legal fate will become clearer.

Whether he can salvage his once-thriving financial empire remains to be seen.
