A 21-year-old University of Georgia student is recovering in hospital after falling from an eighth-story window at an apartment complex in Athens, Georgia, in an incident police are treating as an accident.
Kristin Sargent was found on the pool deck at The Rambler apartment complex shortly after the fall at about 7.30pm on Saturday, according to an Athens-Clarke County Police Department report.
The senior, who studies finance and marketing, was reportedly conscious and alert after the incident and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Fall May Have Been Broken by Pool Furniture
Police said the circumstances immediately before the fall remain under investigation, but their report states that Sargent had been dancing on a couch or air mattress positioned close to an open window.
She apparently went through the window’s screen and fell to the area below.
Investigators said a metal pool chair with a cushion appeared to have broken part of her fall. The cushion was reportedly left with blood on it, while an armrest on the chair had broken away.
The precise height of the fall has not been established. However, an eighth-story apartment window in a typical residential building could be roughly 54 to 60 feet above ground level.
Family Rushed to Athens After Emergency Call
Sargent’s father, Richard Sargent, said the family was in Virginia when they received the news.
He recalled being told simply that Kristin had suffered a serious fall, prompting the family to travel to Athens to be with her.
Richard said his daughter later spoke to a friend and expressed disbelief that she had survived.
“She was talking to one of her friends and saying, ‘Hey, I’m alive. I can’t believe it,’” he told Channel 2 Action News.
He said doctors were treating her for multiple injuries in intensive care, including broken bones, and described his daughter as a fighter.
Incident Followed Georgia Football Victory
The fall happened after the University of Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 41-13 at Sanford Stadium in Athens on Saturday.
Richard said the timing of the incident came amid celebrations surrounding the team’s victory, although he did not provide further details about what Sargent had been doing immediately before the fall.
The circumstances remain subject to investigation.
Apartment Complex Reminds Residents About Window Safety
Following the incident, The Rambler sent a message to residents reminding them about safety features installed on the complex’s windows.
Residents were warned not to tamper with, remove or disengage the devices positioned next to the windows.
Police have not said whether the safety mechanism on the window involved in Sargent’s fall was engaged at the time or whether it played any role in what happened.
The apartment complex said it was continuing to gather information and review the circumstances.
Police Treat the Fall as an Accident
Authorities have not indicated that they suspect criminal activity.
According to the police report, the evidence collected so far has led investigators to regard the incident as an accident, although the exact sequence of events has not been established.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Student Begins Long Recovery
Sargent’s father said his daughter is now concentrating on recovering from her injuries and expressed gratitude for the support she has received from the University of Georgia community and medical staff.
“She’s a good fighter, and she’s going to be OK,” he said.
Sargent is a senior at the university and has also worked as a business analyst intern with Capital One. According to her LinkedIn profile, she is due to take up a full-time business analyst position with the company in McLean, Virginia.
She is also a member of the Kappa Delta sorority at the University of Georgia.
Her latest medical condition has not been publicly disclosed, although police previously confirmed that she was conscious and alert following the fall.
Apartment Complex Offers Support
A representative for The Rambler said the company was thinking of Sargent and hoping for her recovery.
“Our thoughts are with our resident, and we are wishing for a speedy recovery,” the representative said.
The complex added that it was continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather information as authorities investigate.
