Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is quite optimistic as he claims some Russian troops have been losing morale and fleeing back to their land, thanks to efforts from his own troops and civilians to defend their country from the Kremlin’s attacks.

In a message on Facebook on Wednesday, 2 March 2022, Zelensky roughly 9,000 members of Russia’s invading force had been killed since President Vladimir Putin launched the attack last week. However, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said more than 2,000 civilians had been killed since the beginning of Russia’s invasion.

Volodymyr Zelensky has also thanked Ukrainians for driving “out the enemy” – and even accused Russian troops of looting.

“Our military, our border guards, our territorial defense, even ordinary farmers capture the Russian military every day. And all the captives say only one thing: they do not know why they are here. Despite the fact that there are dozens of times more of them, the morale of the enemy is constantly deteriorating.”

The president has encouraged fellow Ukrainians to not afford the Russian military officials a moment of peace so they can be discouraged and leave.

“They will not have peace here, they will not have food here, and they will not have a single quiet moment here. The occupiers will receive only one thing from Ukraine — a rebuff, a worthy rebuff. They will always remember that we do not give up,” he said.

Meanwhile the United Nations (UN) says at least one million refugees have fled across the borders of Ukraine since Russian military forces launched their offensive a week ago.

“In just seven days we have witnessed the exodus of one million refugees from Ukraine to neighbouring countries,” U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi wrote in a tweet on Wednesday.

If that figure is anything to go by, that means 2% of the Ukrainian population have opted to leave the country, but the numbers are expected to increase as the attacks continue.
