Matome Chiloane, Gauteng’s Education MEC, has conveyed deep sadness over a heartbreaking incident during a school excursion to Wag n Bietjie Resort in Witkoppin, Olifantafontein, on Saturday, January 20, 2024. A Grade 7 girl from Laerskool Queenswood in Pretoria tragically drowned during the approved one-day outing.

Active Police Investigation: Circumstances Surrounding the Tragic Incident

Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic drowning during the school excursion.

Both the district and the school have extended their condolences to the grieving family. In response to this incident, MEC Chiloane has called for an independent investigation, with the education department initiating the appointment of an external law firm.

Once finalized, the firm will be introduced to the school Management Team and the bereaved family.

To honor and commemorate the life of the student, a memorial service was conducted on Wednesday, January 24, 2024.
