SuperSport United’s midfielder Keanin Ayer has opened up about his decision to return to South Africa after spending over a decade playing football in Europe.
A Fresh Start with SuperSport United
Ayer, who came up through the Right to Dream academy, has joined SuperSport United as one of the key signings made by coach Gavin Hunt to strengthen the squad for the upcoming season.
Before making his way back to South Africa, Ayer had stints with Varbergs BoIS, Sandefjord, and Naestved BK across Europe.
The Drive to Reconnect with Home
In a recent interview with FARPost, Ayer shared that his move back home was driven by two main reasons.
Firstly, he expressed a deep sense of longing for his family and home environment after being away for such a long time.
“It’s been way too long since I had my family around me,” Ayer explained.
He emphasized the loneliness he felt while playing abroad, where, despite enjoying training with teammates, he often returned to an empty home.
“Sometimes, that’s not good for the head, and you want to be clear in the head so you can perform well and play at your best,” he added.
Aiming for a Bafana Bafana Call-Up
Another significant factor behind Ayer’s return is his ambition to secure a spot in the Bafana Bafana squad.
He noted that many players selected for the national team are from the local Betway Premiership rather than European leagues.
“Mostly, it’s players from this side [who get call-ups],” he said.
By performing well in the domestic league, Ayer hopes to improve his chances of being noticed by the national team selectors.
Future Plans and Aspirations
Looking ahead, Ayer has not ruled out a return to Europe.
He mentioned that he plans to go back eventually, possibly in a couple of seasons, once he feels more settled and mentally prepared.
“I know the time will come, and it’s also in my agent’s plan for me,” he said.
For now, he’s focused on making the most of his time with SuperSport United and enjoying being back home.
