Lagos State Government Ends 25% Discount on Public Transport Fares, Reverting to Regular Rates

Lagos State Government Announces the Conclusion of Transport Fare Discounts

In an official notice shared by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) on Friday, January 26, 2024, the Lagos State Government declared the conclusion of the 25% discount on transport fares across the Lagos State Public Transport System.

This palliative measure, initially introduced in response to the removal of the fuel subsidy in 2023, is set to expire on Sunday, January 28, 2024.

Public Advisory from LAMATA

LAMATA advised Lagosians to take note of this change and prepare for the resumption of regular transport fare rates that were in effect before the adjustment made in December.

The public notice, issued via LAMATA’s official communication channel, emphasized the return to 100% transport fare rates on regulated public transport buses, ferries, and train services starting from Monday, January 29, 2024.

Revisit to Pre-Adjustment Fare Rates

The official post from LAMATA stated, “The 25% rebate on regulated public transport buses, ferry, and train services ends on Sunday, 28th January 2024.

From Monday, 29th January 2024, transport fare on regulated services will return to 100%.” This development marks the conclusion of a temporary measure that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had initially introduced in August 2023, consisting of a 50% rebate on state-owned buses and a 25% reduction on commercial yellow buses on all routes.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s Initiatives in Response to Fuel Subsidy Removal

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s initial announcement aimed to alleviate the impact of the petrol subsidy removal.

Alongside the fare reductions, the governor had also expanded the fleet of staff buses for workers in the Lagos State Public Service as an additional measure to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal.

As the 25% discount draws to a close, the state government takes a step towards restoring normalcy to public transport fare rates.
