A stray dog named Scout, estimated to be between 10 to 12 years old, found his forever home in an unexpected place. He was rescued by the Antrim County Animal Shelter in Michigan, bearing signs of past abuse and a fear of strangers.

Scout’s Escape and Love for the Nursing Home

In 2017, Scout managed to escape from the animal shelter not once but three times. Each time, he made his way to the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility, a nursing home across the street. Residents and staff at the nursing home developed a deep affection for him.

Scout’s Escape Route and Comfy Spot

An investigation into Scout’s escapes revealed that he had to cross multiple fences and a busy highway to reach the nursing home. Once there, he cleverly used the automatic revolving doors to enter the lobby. On all three occasions, he found a brown couch in the lobby and made it his cozy spot for a nap.

Scout’s Adoption and Bond with Residents

After his third uninvited visit, a staff member decided to adopt Scout. However, due to compatibility issues with her other dogs, it was decided that the nursing home itself would be the perfect home for Scout. With the approval of residents, Scout officially became a part of Meadow Brook in 2017.

Scout’s Impact on Residents

Scout quickly endeared himself to the elderly residents at Meadow Brook. They describe him as the “perfect dog” for petting and conversation. He has formed special bonds with residents, including Butch Craig, who generously spoils him with treats.

Support and Cuddles

Not only does Scout provide companionship, but he also offers support during difficult times. When he senses that a resident is nearing the end of their life, he visits their room for comforting cuddles. In return, residents provide comfort during thunderstorms, with Scout seeking solace with those he trusts.

Fundraising for the Animal Shelter

Meadow Brook staff organized a fundraiser called “Scout’s House Paws for the Pantry” to support the Antrim County Animal Shelter, the very shelter that rescued Scout. The fundraiser received global donations, showing the widespread affection for Scout.

Resident of the Month

In February, Scout received the title of Resident of the Month at Meadow Brook. His presence has undoubtedly brought immense joy and comfort to the nursing home, turning unexpected visits into a heartwarming story of love and companionship.
