Stellenbosch FC made headlines on Friday night with an impressive 2-0 win over the Congolese powerhouse AS Vita Club in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The match, held at Cape Town Stadium, marked a significant step for Stellenbosch as they aim to make history by advancing to the group stage of the tournament in their debut season.
A Strong Start to the Campaign
The PSL side came into this match with high spirits after a dominant performance in the first preliminary round.
They had just triumphed with an 8-0 aggregate victory over Nsingizini Hotspurs.
The first leg saw them win 3-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, and they sealed their progress with a 5-0 victory in the return leg.
Local Form Adds to the Momentum
Stellenbosch FC’s success isn’t just limited to continental competition.
They’ve started the 2024/25 season strongly in domestic play, having defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 both home and away in the MTN8 semi-final.
They’re now set to face Orlando Pirates in the final.
A Winning Performance Against AS Vita
In their match against AS Vita, who were the 1973 CAF Champions League winners, Stellenbosch showed early promise.
Devin Titus had a chance to score in the opening minutes but couldn’t capitalize.
However, the breakthrough came in the 7th minute when defender Thabo Moloisane scored with a powerful header.
Mojela Adds to the Lead
Just five minutes later, new signing Lehlogonolo Mojela extended Stellenbosch’s lead.
Mojela, who joined from TS Galaxy in the off-season, made a significant impact and demonstrated his value to the team.
Despite Mojela’s best efforts, Titus missed a chance to score later in the first half, but Stellenbosch went into the break with a solid 2-0 lead.
Securing the Win
In the second half, Stellenbosch continued to control the game and kept AS Vita from scoring.
They maintained their lead to secure the 2-0 victory and set themselves up well for the second leg, which is scheduled for Sunday, September 22, 2024.
What’s Next?
Stellenbosch FC will look to build on this strong performance as they head into the second leg, aiming to secure their place in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.
