The South African cricket team, known as the Proteas, is gearing up for their upcoming tours with a strategic focus on enhancing their squad depth in white-ball cricket.

New Faces and Fresh Opportunities

On Monday, Cricket South Africa unveiled three different squads for the forthcoming tours.

One exciting addition is Andile Simelane, an uncapped all-rounder from the Dolphins, who will join the team for the One Day Internationals (ODIs) against Afghanistan and the Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) against Ireland.

The squads also include Dolphins’ all-rounder Jason Smith and Lions’ leg-spinner Nqaba Peter, who will feature in all three formats of the game.

Proteas limited-overs coach Rob Walter explained the rationale behind these selections.

“We’re giving opportunities to some of the emerging players and those who have shown promise recently,” he said.

“This move aligns with our goal of expanding our player pool as we look ahead to major International Cricket Council (ICC) tournaments over the next 18 months, and ultimately, the World Cup in 2027.”

Walter added, “Tours like these provide a unique chance for players to gain international experience under different conditions.

I’m eager to see how seasoned players rise to the challenge and how new faces can seize their opportunities to become regular members of the squad.”

Proteas vs Afghanistan: Three ODIs in Sharjah from September 18 to 22.
Proteas vs Ireland: Two T20Is and three ODIs in Abu Dhabi from September 27 to October 7.
