When Sekhukhune United welcomed Peter Hyballa on July 1, 2024, the move was expected to signal a new era of triumph and progress for the club.
However, the excitement quickly fizzled as the pre-season got underway. Just a few weeks in, the team is facing significant unrest, with player grievances and a poor pre-season performance raising serious doubts about Hyballa’s suitability for the role.
Peter Hyballa, known for his intense and often controversial coaching style, has a track record of conflicts with both players and management.
His previous roles at clubs like NEC Nijmegen and Esbjerg fB were marred by accusations of verbal abuse, bullying, and even physical confrontations.
Even though Hyballa once led DAC Dunajská Streda to a commendable second place in the Slovakian league in 2019, his longest stint at any club was just 238 days at NAC Breda, according to Transfermkt.
The current scene at Sekhukhune United seems to follow a troubling pattern. Reports indicate that several players have voiced their dissatisfaction with Hyballa’s demeaning behavior and harsh criticism.
This has resulted in a divided team spirit before the season has even started.
Hyballa has reportedly made disparaging and unprofessional comments about two players—mocking one’s running style and accusing another of laziness. Moreover, his pre-season record, featuring only two wins and six losses, has done little to bolster confidence in his strategies.
Mixed Results in Pre-Season
During pre-season, Sekhukhune United managed to secure wins against AmaZulu and Angolan team Bravos do Maquis.
However, they suffered four defeats—three against lower-tier Motsepe Foundation Championship teams (Orbit College, Hungry Lion, and Casric Stars) and one against Betway Premiership side Stellenbosch FC.
Hyballa’s past is dotted with controversies, such as allegedly photographing undressed players at Esbjerg fB and sidelining Ghanaian winger Quincy Owusu Abeyie at NAC Breda. These incidents highlight the potential risks of his appointment, suggesting that his coaching style may not foster a unified and successful team.
Growing Concerns
“It’s becoming increasingly problematic.
The players are genuinely unhappy with the coach’s approach. There’s a concern that he might have lost the dressing room even before the season starts,” a source revealed to FARPost.
In addition to the issues with players, the club has reportedly lost top analyst Tinashe Shingai Mukandatsama, allegedly due to tensions with Hyballa.
The coach is said to have clashed with his support staff during his brief time at the club.
Interestingly, veteran forward Pogiso Mahlangu described Hyballa as both friendly and demanding. “He expects a lot from us, and he doesn’t seem to relax or joke around,” Mahlangu noted in an interview with journalists.
A Tough Decision Ahead
Now, Sekhukhune United’s management faces a tough choice.
Should they stick with Hyballa, hoping that his undeniable passion and occasional successes will outweigh his disruptive behavior? Or should they cut their losses early and admit that hiring him might have been a mistake that could jeopardize the season?
The Road Ahead
Only time will reveal how this situation unfolds.
One thing is certain: Peter Hyballa’s return to management has been far from smooth, and Sekhukhune United may already be second-guessing their decision to bring him on board.
