Marc van Heerden, who recently wrapped up a remarkable 20-year career in professional football, has just achieved a significant milestone in his new journey.
The retired PSL defender has successfully earned his UEFA B Coaching License, marking the start of an exciting chapter in coaching.
A Farewell to Playing
After a long and distinguished career, Van Heerden decided to retire from playing football in August.
Over the years, he’s made his mark with several PSL teams, including the University of Pretoria (AmaTuks), Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu FC, Cape Town City FC, Stellenbosch FC, and Chippa United. Known for his versatility, Van Heerden was primarily a left-back but could adapt to play as a centre-back when needed.
Transitioning to Coaching
At 36, Van Heerden announced his retirement with a clear vision of his future in coaching.
He expressed his desire to shift from the pitch to the sidelines, which was a significant factor in his decision to retire from professional play.
UEFA B License Achievement
On Tuesday, Van Heerden took to social media to share his exciting news.
He proudly announced that he has completed the UEFA B Coaching License course through the Scottish Football Association.
“I am honoured and excited to announce I have successfully completed my UEFA B license through the Scottish FA,” Van Heerden posted on X (formerly Twitter).
He added, “Going from professional playing into the coaching world takes a lot of change of perspective and understanding.”
Van Heerden also expressed his gratitude to his mentors: Dougie Anderson, Liam Fox, Mixu Paatelainen, Callum Davidson, and Richie Wilson.
“The growth I have made in the last year has been immense,” he noted.
What’s Next for Van Heerden?
With the UEFA B License under his belt, Van Heerden is setting his sights on achieving the UEFA A Coaching License next.
It’s clear that his journey in football is far from over, and we can look forward to seeing what’s next for this dedicated and talented coach.
