In the first week of July, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will distribute grants to a significant portion of the population.
These grants are a crucial source of income for many individuals, with approximately 18 million people receiving permanent “normal” grants and an additional 10 million benefiting from the temporary R350 grant introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Most Common Usage: Food and Child Support Grants
Research indicates that child support grants are the most prevalent type of assistance provided by SASSA.
These grants have proven to reduce child hunger, alleviate poverty, and enhance school attendance among beneficiaries.
Generally, SASSA grants are primarily utilized for purchasing food.
The funds are made available from the second day of the month or the nearest working day.
Payment Dates for July 2023 SASSA Grants
SASSA follows a specific payment schedule for different types of grants.
Pension (older person’s grant) is disbursed first, followed by disability and children’s grants.
All other SASSA grants, including the R350 grant, which no longer has a fixed payment date, are distributed from the third day of the grant disbursement.
Here are the payment dates for July 2023 SASSA grants:
- Older persons: Tuesday, 4 July
- Disability grant: Wednesday, 5 July
- Children’s grant: Thursday, 6 July
- All other SASSA grants, including the R350 grant, are paid out from Thursday, 6 July.
Accessing the Funds and Convenient Payment Methods
Beneficiaries have various options for accessing their SASSA grants.
While normal grants can still be collected from post office branches, ATMs and pay points at selected retail partners such as Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and Shoprite U-Save also provide withdrawal services.
The SASSA gold card can be used for purchases and transactions, functioning like a regular debit card.
SASSA encourages recipients to opt for direct deposit into their accounts, as it is the most convenient payment method.
