SAFA Head of Referees Abdul Ebrahim Reflects on Past Season’s Officiating, Anticipates Enhanced Standards for Next PSL Campaign

As the new PSL season approaches, SAFA’s Head of Referees, Abdul Ebrahim, has taken a critical look back at the officiating of the previous season.

He acknowledges that there’s always room for improvement.

Recognizing Top Performers

Sikhumbuzo Gasa stood out as the Referee of the 2023/24 Season, while Romario Phiri was recognized as the Assistant Referee of the Season.

Despite these accolades, officiating in both the DStv Premiership and the Motsepe Foundation Championship faced intense scrutiny, leading to some referees being enrolled in SAFA’s rehabilitation program to address their mistakes.

Ongoing Development

Speaking to FARPost, Ebrahim emphasizes that refining match officials is an ongoing process.

He expresses optimism that this season’s standards will surpass those of the previous one.

Striving for Better Standards

Continuous Improvement

“We always aim to see improvements in refereeing year after year,” Ebrahim states.

“There were times when officiating made headlines due to errors.

It’s part of the learning curve in officiating.”

Advice to Officials

Ebrahim advises referees not to dwell on their mistakes but to learn from them and focus on upcoming matches.

Rehabilitation programs are in place to support officials in coming back stronger after setbacks.

Preparing for the Season Ahead

Upcoming Workshops

In preparation for the new season, PSL match officials are gearing up for a comprehensive five-day pre-season workshop next month.

This workshop will cover updates to the laws of the game and include fitness tests crucial for their eligibility.

Fitness Standards

Officials must pass these tests to be considered for the upcoming season.

Those who fall short will have a chance to retake the tests after six weeks.

This proactive approach aims to ensure that match officials are well-prepared and up to date as they head into the next PSL season.
