Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner, has pleaded not guilty to revised murder charges following the unsealing of a grand-jury indictment connected to the deaths of his parents.
Reiner is accused of killing his father and mother, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home in December.
The new indictment includes a special circumstance allegation that the killings were committed by lying in wait.
Prosecutors allege a betrayal of trust
The indictment does not publicly provide specific details about what prosecutors say happened inside the family’s Brentwood residence on the night of the deaths.
Prosecutors described the case as an especially serious alleged violation of family trust, saying the killings represented a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the victims.
The grand jury returned the indictment on 20 July.
Unlike the earlier proceedings, the indictment allows prosecutors to move forward without going through California’s preliminary hearing process.
Death penalty eligibility now applies
The lying-in-wait allegation significantly raises the stakes for Reiner.
Under California law, the special circumstance can make a defendant eligible for the death penalty.
California currently has a temporary halt on executions, and prosecutors have not indicated whether they intend to seek a death sentence if Reiner is convicted.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said prosecutors hope the grand-jury indictment will move the case closer to trial and ultimately to a resolution.
Knife allegation adds another aggravating factor
Reiner is also accused of personally using a knife during the killings.
That allegation constitutes an additional aggravating factor under California law because a knife is classified as a dangerous and deadly weapon.
Reiner previously pleaded not guilty to the original murder charges in February.
His latest plea came on Wednesday after the new indictment was made public.
Parents were found dead in Brentwood home
Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found dead on 14 December at their home in the affluent Brentwood neighbourhood of Los Angeles.
The couple’s daughter reportedly discovered their bodies.
The Los Angeles County medical examiner determined that both had suffered multiple sharp-force injuries.
Nick Reiner was arrested in Los Angeles on the same day.

Nick Reiner is due back in court on 15 September for another hearing as the prosecution prepares to advance the case.
The latest indictment does not establish guilt.
Reiner remains presumed innocent unless prosecutors prove the allegations against him beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
