Rights Activist Commends Godswill Akpabio’s Election as Senate President, Urges Independence and Good Governance

…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. Dr Monday Onyekachi Ubani, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Section On Public Interest And Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL), has shared his thoughts on the emergence of Senator Godswill Akpabio as Nigeria’s Senate President.


As previously reported by Naija News, Akpabio, a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, was sworn in as the 10th National Assembly Senate President on Tuesday, alongside Senator Barau Jibrin as the Deputy Senate President.

Merit and Independence: Expectations for the New Senate President

Ubani, a renowned rights activist and lawyer, congratulated Akpabio on his election and urged him not to become a rubber-stamp Senate President who simply follows the direction of others.

While acknowledging Akpabio’s merits for the position, Ubani challenged him to ensure the independence of the legislative arm and prioritize laws that directly impact the lives of Nigerians.

Working Towards a Functioning Nigeria

Expressing his warm welcome, Ubani highlighted Akpabio’s past positions and commended his capacity and competence for the role of Senate President.

He emphasized that despite the controversy surrounding his ministerial position, Akpabio successfully navigated through challenges.

Ubani noted that Akpabio’s election as Senate President was a result of his uncommon grace and the sensitivity displayed by the distinguished senators in their choice.

Ubani advised Akpabio to prevent the Senate from becoming a mere rubber stamp for the executive branch, stressing the importance of scrutinizing executive decisions for proper checks and balances.
