Richard Keys has openly defended suspended Premier League referee David Coote, arguing that he should have the opportunity to rebuild his career after recent controversies.

Despite the scrutiny Coote faces, Keys believes a fair investigation should be conducted before passing final judgment, expressing empathy based on his own past experiences in the industry.

Suspension Following Controversial Video Leak

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) recently suspended Coote and launched an investigation after a video surfaced in which he allegedly insulted Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and used offensive language toward the club.

Shortly afterward, a second video reportedly showed Coote inhaling a white powder, further intensifying the scrutiny.

The clip, which was leaked to the press, appeared to show Coote using a rolled-up banknote to snort the substance while officiating during the previous summer’s Euros.

Keys Calls for Transparency and Compassion

In a blog post, Keys emphasized the importance of a “full and transparent investigation” into the allegations against Coote.

Reflecting on his own exit from Sky Sports in 2011 after leaked sexist comments, Keys voiced his understanding of public backlash and professional exile.

He argued that while Coote may no longer be able to referee in the Premier League, he should not face a complete career downfall.

Instead, he suggested Coote could find a new role within the Football League.

Addressing Mental Health and Career Consequences

Keys highlighted that Coote’s situation is a matter of mental health and well-being, cautioning against extreme punitive measures.

He acknowledged that Coote may be in a difficult mental state and called for support rather than a full expulsion from the field.

“If we genuinely believe in mental health and well-being, we need to give him a chance to move forward,” Keys wrote. “Destroying his career could have devastating effects.”

Advocating for Drug Testing and Referee Accountability

Keys also urged PGMOL to consider implementing random drug testing for referees, citing Coote’s case as a reason for stricter oversight.

He dismissed fan accusations that Coote has been biased against Liverpool, attributing any questionable officiating to skill rather than prejudice.

According to Keys, fans’ frustration with Coote stems from PGMOL’s failure to openly address referee errors.

Looking to the Example of Bobby Madley

To support his argument, Keys referenced Bobby Madley, a former referee who was dismissed in 2018 after sending a video mocking a disabled person.

Madley temporarily moved to Norway but was later reinstated to referee in the English Football League.

By 2022, he had earned the chance to officiate in the Premier League once more after proving himself in lower leagues.
