Rethabile Khumalo took to Instagram on Monday, January 13, to share a poignant video of her late mother, the legendary singer Winnie Khumalo.
In the clip, Winnie opens up about the lack of support from family during tough times, a sentiment that has resonated with many people.
Winnie Khumalo’s Message on Family and Support
The interview, originally recorded for a podcast, shows Winnie reflecting on how family dynamics have changed over the years.
In a moment of honesty, she explained how the once-cherished saying “blood is thicker than water” no longer holds true in her experience.
“Nowadays, family doesn’t always come through when you need them,” Winnie said, hinting at how family members often fail to offer support during difficult moments.
“Your family is now your number one enemy most of the time.
We used to think that blood was thicker than water, but today, when you fall, they celebrate.”
Winnie elaborated on how family members often stay away when someone is sick but rush to be present for the funeral, a stark contradiction.
“When you die, they travel from KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape to bury you.
Why didn’t they send you money or assist you while you were still alive?” she questioned.
