…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. Reports indicate that President Bola Tinubu has taken proactive measures to foster unity among the All Progressives Congress (APC) members-elect of the National Assembly.
The objective is to reach a collective decision regarding the zoning of principal offices within the party.
Meeting with Speaker Contenders and Plea for National Cohesion
During a meeting held at the State House, which commenced at approximately 7 pm yesterday, President Tinubu engaged with candidates vying for the position of Speaker who are challenging the party’s preferred choice, Tajudeen Abbas.
Notable contenders present at the meeting included Yusuf Gagdi, Sada Soli, Miriam Onuoha, and Muktar Betara.
The APC’s National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, was also in attendance at the meeting.
Plea for Cooperation and Power-sharing
An anonymous source revealed that President Tinubu appealed to the aspirants for Speakership to step aside in favor of Abbas, emphasizing the significance of national cohesion and unity.
However, the concerned contenders expressed their intention to consult with their supporters before reaching a decision, and they pledged to communicate their response through Senator Omisore.
It is speculated that some of the aspirants may withdraw their candidacy in deference to the President’s appeal.
Brokering a Compromise and Power-sharing Arrangements
The source disclosed that President Tinubu skillfully mediated the situation, aiming to ensure a smooth start for the 10th House of Representatives.
A “no-winner, no vanquished” approach was adopted, with plans to accommodate these aspirants in the power-sharing arrangements within the House.
The President also granted the aspirants’ request to consult with their respective supporters.
Furthermore, it was reported that the ruling party expressed discontent with a Senate President candidate who has allegedly commercialized and compromised the process.
The candidate’s campaign tactics, involving traditional rulers, extensive billboard placements, and propaganda, have raised concerns within the party.
Future Meetings and Appeal to Party Members
A Senator confirmed that the meeting was crucial for establishing order prior to the inauguration.
The President is scheduled to meet with APC senators-elect and House of Representatives members-elect to make a final appeal.
The meeting is expected to involve APC governors and members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
Conclusion:
President Tinubu’s efforts to unite the APC members-elect of the National Assembly regarding the zoning of principal offices have taken shape through a meeting with Speaker contenders.
The President’s plea for national cohesion and unity, as well as the prospect of power-sharing arrangements, aims to facilitate a smooth start for the 10th House of Representatives.
Further meetings are planned to appeal to party members and ensure a harmonious transition.
