Premier League clubs break spending records as over £2 billion flows into transfer market across England

The 2024-25 season has been one for the books when it comes to Premier League transfer spending.

Clubs have collectively splashed out more than £2 billion across the two transfer windows, flexing their financial muscle in a market that continues to outpace the rest of the world.

While the usual big spenders have been active, a surprising name has emerged as the top spender this season.

Brighton, known for their smart recruitment strategy, spent a staggering £231.4 million on 25 new signings, making them the highest-spending club of the season.

Brighton Leads the Spending Frenzy

Brighton’s spending spree was a show of faith in their new manager Fabian Hurzeler, who was backed with a host of new signings, including Georginio Rutter, Yankuba Minteh, and Matt O’Reilly.

While their summer transfer window was hectic, they still made moves in January, adding young Greek striker Stefanos Tzimas for £20 million.

Following Brighton in the spending charts, Manchester United came in second with a total outlay of £202.1 million.

They made major moves in the summer, signing the likes of Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, and Matthijs de Ligt, hoping to revamp their squad under Erik ten Hag.

Meanwhile, cross-town rivals Manchester City weren’t far behind, spending £200.8 million, mainly in the January window after losing key players like Julian Alvarez, Joao Cancelo, and Sergio Gomez.

Chelsea and Aston Villa Round Out the Top Five

No surprise here—Chelsea continued their squad overhaul, ranking as the most active team in the Premier League.

The Blues made 35 new signings and offloaded 31 players, spending £196.7 million in the process.

Aston Villa, looking to solidify their European aspirations, completed the top five with £176.9 million in transfer expenses.

Liverpool Spends the Least but Stays on Top

At the other end of the spending table, Liverpool emerged as the most frugal club in the Premier League, spending just £34.7 million.

Despite the low expenditure, new manager Arne Slot has guided the Reds to a stellar season with only two major signings—Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Nearby, Everton wasn’t much bigger in the spending department, investing £41.3 million, while Newcastle also kept spending relatively low at £56.2 million.

Newly Promoted Clubs Make a Splash

The three promoted clubs—Ipswich, Southampton, and Leicester—were not afraid to open their checkbooks in a bid to survive in the Premier League.

Ipswich led the pack with a £126 million outlay, while Southampton and Leicester followed with £100.9 million and £73.6 million, respectively.
