Broadcaster Jo Whiley has spoken candidly about the emotional days surrounding the death of her father, Martin Whiley, revealing how her family helped her younger sister, Frances, understand his passing.
Speaking on her Dig It podcast with Zoe Ball, the Radio 2 presenter became visibly emotional as she reflected on the conversations that followed her father’s death and the remarkable compassion shown by her sister.
Martin died aged 86 after living with Parkinson’s disease, just weeks after Jo had publicly discussed the challenges his illness had brought to the family.
Explaining Loss to Frances
One of the most difficult moments for Jo was helping Frances, 53, come to terms with the reality that their father would not recover.
Frances lives with Cri du Chat syndrome, a rare genetic condition associated with severe learning disabilities and developmental delays, as well as diabetes.
Rather than avoiding difficult truths, Jo explained that the family chose to answer Frances’ questions honestly.
She said her sister understood that their father was seriously ill but repeatedly asked whether he was “not going to die.” Jo responded by gently explaining that he would not be returning home.
When Frances asked where he was going, their deeply religious mother comforted her by explaining that he would be with Jesus.
Jo described how Frances processed the information by asking about their father’s age before quietly accepting the explanation in her own way.
A Final Memory the Family Will Treasure
Jo also shared one of the family’s most cherished final moments with Martin before his death.
She recalled Frances standing beside their father while he drifted in and out of consciousness, repeatedly encouraging him to say her name.
To the family’s delight, Martin managed to speak and called out “Frances.”
The touching exchange left Jo emotional during the podcast, while Zoe Ball also struggled to hold back tears.
Jo said her sister continues to talk about that moment with pride, repeatedly saying, “Daddy said my name,” describing it as the perfect farewell between father and daughter.

Jo announced her father’s death through an emotional Instagram tribute accompanied by photographs and videos spanning decades of family life.
She remembered Martin as a man whose greatest happiness came from making other people smile.
According to Jo, friends and members of the local community frequently described him as “a character,” a description she felt perfectly captured his personality.
She praised his generosity, recalling how he was well known in his village, at the local pub, and even at her children’s school, where he enthusiastically helped care for his grandchildren long before hands-on grandfathers became commonplace.
A Childhood Marked by Hardship
In her tribute, Jo reflected on the difficult experiences that shaped her father’s life long before he became a husband and father.
As a child, Martin spent two years alone in a London sanatorium after contracting tuberculosis, an experience that left a lasting impression on him.
Having also grown up without his parents, he was raised by a family friend he affectionately called “Pap.”
Jo said meeting her mother transformed his life, giving him the family and unconditional love he had missed during childhood.
Those experiences inspired him to devote himself to caring for others throughout his life.
A Dedicated Father and Advocate
Jo described her father as someone who embraced every challenge with kindness, including raising Frances during a period when support for people with learning disabilities was far less developed than it is today.
She credited Martin with becoming a positive influence in the learning disability community simply through his unwavering acceptance, compassion and willingness to include everyone.
Music was another lifelong passion. Jo fondly remembered him walking around construction sites where he worked as an electrician carrying a large portable stereo, joking that he was the family’s original DJ.
His love of music, she said, played a major role in shaping her own successful broadcasting career.

Following Jo’s announcement, messages of sympathy poured in from friends, colleagues and well-known figures across the entertainment industry.

Parkinson’s Battle Had Taken a Heavy Toll
Martin’s death came shortly after Jo had openly discussed the daily realities of caring for both of her parents.
In recent interviews, she explained that much of her time had been spent visiting hospitals after her mother underwent back surgery while also supporting her father through the progression of Parkinson’s disease.
Jo previously revealed that Martin had sometimes forgotten he had the condition, even questioning whether he still needed medication or whether Parkinson’s could simply disappear.
She described repeatedly having to explain that the illness has no cure as one of the most heartbreaking aspects of watching the disease progress.
She said the family often experienced the same conversations every day, comparing the routine to “Groundhog Day” as memory loss and confusion increasingly affected her father’s daily life.

Despite the hardships Martin endured during his early years and the challenges brought by illness later in life, Jo said his greatest legacy was the loving home he created for his wife, children and grandchildren.
She said he gave his family joyful childhoods filled with laughter, storytelling and music, adding that he would be remembered not only as an exceptional father but also as a devoted grandfather whose warmth touched everyone who knew him.
