Pope Francis Marks Birthday with Underprivileged Families Amid Vatican Celebrations

Pope Francis Celebrates Birthday by Sharing Joy

Pope Francis marked his birthday on December 17, 2023, by celebrating with children and families assisted by the Vatican’s Santa Marta Pediatric Dispensary.

The pontiff, known for his humility and compassion, shared warm wishes for a merry Christmas with a smile, emphasizing blessings for all.

A Tradition of Humble Celebrations

Since assuming the papacy in 2013, the Argentine pontiff has opted for modest celebrations, dedicating his birthday to spending time with Rome’s impoverished and marginalized. In previous years, he chose heartwarming encounters over grand festivities.

For instance, on his 80th birthday, he had breakfast with homeless individuals from the Vatican vicinity, and on another occasion, hosted a pizza party for sick children at the Paul VI Audience Hall.

Honoring Charity Work and Service

In line with his commitment to charitable causes, on his 86th birthday, Pope Francis honored three individuals for their commendable charitable endeavors.

His recent celebration involved meeting children and families who receive aid from the Santa Marta Pediatric Dispensary. Established in 1922 by Pope Pius XI and managed by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, the dispensary offers medical assistance to underprivileged families and mothers.

It operates with support from volunteers, including those from the Bambino Gesù Hospital and the Vatican’s Association of Sts. Peter and Paul, along with numerous lay volunteers from other Roman hospitals.
