What started as a simple airport drop-off has now spiraled into a nationwide mystery.
Seventeen-year-old Pheobe Bishop never made it onto her flight from Bundaberg to Perth on May 15, where she was planning to reunite with her boyfriend.
That was the last day anyone saw her.
Now, her housemate, James Wood, has broken his silence about the emotional car ride that morning—and the moment Pheobe vanished.
“She Was So Worked Up”: The Chaotic Morning Before Her Flight
According to Wood, Pheobe had been buzzing with excitement in the days leading up to the trip.
But that morning, things took a turn.
She overslept, missed her alarm, and reportedly flew into a frenzy.
In a conversation with Daily Mail Australia, Wood described her as “furious” and “escalating”—even smashing the TV in frustration.
“She wanted to look good for her boyfriend,” Wood said.
“She was shouting about not having anything to wear.”
Trying to help, Wood offered her a new pair of grey track pants, which she reluctantly accepted.
Despite her temper, he described her as a “great kid” who just needed a safe place after a tough home life.
The Ride to the Airport—and a Strange Phone Call
They were running behind, but still had time to make it.
Wood ran to grab energy drinks and by 8 a.m., they were packed into the car—Wood’s dog included—and headed to Bundaberg Airport.
Bromley drove, Pheobe sat in the back.
Around 8:30 a.m., before even leaving Gin Gin, Pheobe called her boyfriend.
He later told someone he could hear yelling in the background—both Wood and Bromley, it seemed, were arguing with her.
Wood admitted tensions were high. Pheobe was upset she hadn’t done her makeup and was still anxious about missing her flight.
Bromley tried to reassure her, passing back her makeup bag and telling her she could get ready during the Brisbane layover.
The Last Time Anyone Saw Her
As they neared the airport, the arguing hadn’t stopped.
Wood said he told Bromley to pull over just before the terminal.
They stepped out of the car to give Pheobe space, walking for what he estimates was five to eight minutes.
When they returned, she and her large duffle bag were gone.
“I thought she had just walked to the terminal,” Wood said.
“We drove there to check but didn’t see her.”
They didn’t go inside the terminal—Wood claimed it would only escalate things.
Instead, they circled nearby roads hoping she’d show up.
That’s when CCTV later caught the car heading toward Good Night Scrub National Park.
Wood insists he didn’t harm Pheobe and genuinely believed she made her flight—until her sister messaged the next day, asking where she was.
Timeline: The Disappearance of Pheobe Bishop
May 15: A No-Show at the Airport
Pheobe missed her flight to Brisbane, and eventually Perth.
Her boyfriend waited at the Perth airport—she never arrived.
She was last seen wearing a green tank top and grey trackies.
May 16–17: Declared Missing
When she didn’t show up, her worried mother, Kylie Johnson, began circulating flyers.
Police interviewed Wood and Bromley, who said they dropped her off at the airport.
No charges were laid.
May 20–22: Investigations Ramp Up
Police scoured Airport Drive but found no trace of her or her luggage.
A neighbor’s CCTV caught the couple’s SUV on Samuels Road—two hours after they should have been at the airport.
Authorities sealed off the Gin Gin house.
Forensics searched the home and later seized Bromley’s SUV for examination.
Meanwhile, Pheobe’s final TikTok posts surfaced—cryptic mentions of family estrangement and vows not to return home.
A Deeper Look at the Housemates
Wood and Bromley had only been living together for a few months.
Wood had relocated after a divorce, while Bromley was known locally.
Shockingly, police discovered weapons at the property.
Bromley was already on bail for previous firearm charges.
Both were later charged—unrelated to Pheobe’s case—with weapons offenses.
Neighbors painted a grim picture of the property: parties, noise, and eventually the horrific discovery of dead dogs on the premises.
Family Tensions and Media Fallout
As public interest grew, family divisions spilled out online and on TV.
Pheobe’s aunt claimed the teen had a troubled home life.
In leaked texts, Pheobe reportedly said she was “flying the f*** out of here” and didn’t plan on returning.
Her mother, Kylie, pushed back hard—saying her sister “knew nothing” about her daughter’s real life.
Tensions flared as the media spotlight intensified.
May 24–29: Desperate Searches and New Leads
Authorities launched land, air, and water searches in nearby scrubland.
Cadaver dogs were brought in.
Police later confirmed finding “potentially linked” items but believed some evidence may have already been moved.
By this point, both housemates had been charged with unrelated weapons offenses.
Bromley was spotted at the police station, and Wood was found sleeping in his car at a local park.
“It Gets Harder to Breathe”: A Mother’s Plea
In a heartbreaking video, Kylie Johnson acknowledged the worst might have happened.
Her voice cracked as she pleaded with the public to come forward with any information.
“To not know where you are or if you’re okay…
it’s unbearable,” she said.
Where the Case Stands Now
Despite extensive searches, police have called off active operations in the Good Night Scrub area, though the investigation continues.
Wood is set to appear in court on June 13, and Bromley on June 23—both for unrelated charges.
Pheobe Bishop is still missing.
Her family, friends, and community are holding out hope that someone, somewhere, knows something.
If you have any information, police urge you to come forward.
