The trio’s reign of brutality was exposed during a three-month trial, culminating in convictions for murder and preventing a lawful burial by an Old Bailey jury.
From Voluptuous to Gaunt: Shakira’s Alarming Transformation
Witnesses testified that Shakira Spencer, once described as “beautiful, happy, healthy” at a size 16, had undergone a drastic transformation.
In the months leading up to her tragic death, she withered away to a “gaunt and skeletal” size six. Disturbing images captured the stark contrast between her former self and the battered, bruised figure she became shortly before her demise.
Campaign of Control and Cruelty
The prosecution detailed the insidious campaign of control orchestrated by Studholme, who befriended and gradually took over Shakira’s life and finances.
The abuse reached its peak in September 2022, culminating in a frenzied climax where Shakira was brutally beaten “to the brink of death.” The trio’s acts included using makeshift blowtorches, pouring boiling water, and subjecting Shakira to unimaginable torment.
Cover-Up and Cleanup Operation
Following Shakira’s murder, the trio engaged in a meticulous cover-up, cleaning their homes of any traces of the heinous crime.
They strategically laid newspapers next to the bed, creating a facade of a peaceful demise. The killers even attempted to move Shakira’s body to a caravan but abandoned the plan due to advanced decomposition, opting for a primitive attempt to slow decay by packing ice around her.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie described Shakira’s murder as “the most savage and inhumane way imaginable.” The investigation involved scrutinizing thousands of hours of CCTV footage, forensic examinations, pathology reports, witness accounts, and the defendants’ phones.
The evidence revealed the extent of Shakira’s suffering, capturing chilling footage, messages, and voice notes recorded by the perpetrators themselves.
