The alleged rape of an 18-year-old woman by a 54-year-old Inkosi from the KwaBhidla area in KwaZulu-Natal has sparked outrage across South Africa.
The disturbing incident occurred on May 4, 2025, and has left many questioning the actions of a man who holds a position of authority within his community.
Details of the Incident
According to reports from the South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the accused allegedly offered the young woman a ride from the eGqumeni area.
Instead of dropping her off at her intended destination, he reportedly drove her to a secluded and remote bushy area, where he is accused of raping her.
The suspect appeared in the Hlanganani Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where he was remanded in custody.
He is expected to apply for bail on Monday, May 12, 2025.
Minister Mchunu’s Strong Condemnation
In response to this horrific incident, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu expressed his outrage, condemning the actions of the Inkosi.
He called the act a betrayal of the moral and societal responsibilities expected of traditional leaders.
Mchunu emphasized that the accused’s position of power should have been used to uphold ethical values, not to violate them.
“This vile act is not only an assault on the victim but also a violation of the trust placed in traditional leaders,” Mchunu said.
“The Inkosi’s actions were clearly premeditated, using his car to carry out such an atrocious crime.”
Mchunu also reflected on the unexpected nature of the incident, stating that discussions with his counterparts in the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) had never addressed the possibility of traditional leaders being involved in such crimes.
His remarks highlighted the shock and disappointment at the betrayal of community trust.
Support for the Victim and Family
The Minister praised the swift response of the SAPS in apprehending the suspect and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the victim and her family.
He reassured the public that the justice system would treat the case with the seriousness it deserves, ensuring that the victim’s dignity and voice are prioritized.
“We stand in unwavering solidarity with the victim and her family during this painful time,” Mchunu stated.
“No one, regardless of their title or position, should be allowed to act with impunity, especially in such a serious matter like Gender-Based Violence.”
Addressing Gender-Based Violence in South Africa
The tragic incident has reignited the ongoing conversation around the prevalence of gender-based violence in South Africa.
As the country grapples with these issues, it raises important questions about how to tackle rape culture and ensure accountability for those in positions of power.
