Former Pitso Mosimane, widely respected for his international coaching career, visited South African Football Association last week to present a comprehensive Youth Football Manual he has spent nearly five years researching.

The manual aims to transform grassroots football across South Africa by providing structured guidance for young players aged seven to 18.

A Manual for Grassroots Coaches

Mosimane emphasized that this manual is not for professional league coaches but for those working with youth players in schools, townships, and local communities.

“It is a youth manual. This is directed to a coach, a teacher, a coach in Soweto or in any township who is coaching football, a coach who’s going to schools and coaching the pupils.

This manual will give guidance and principles on how to coach a seven-year-old differently from a nine-year-old,” Mosimane explained.

The document covers age-appropriate training, session structures, pitch size, ball size, and other key elements to ensure young players develop holistically — technically, physically, mentally, and tactically.

SAFA Leadership Welcomes the Initiative

SAFA Technical Director Molefi Ntseki described the meeting with Mosimane as “very important,” highlighting that the manual addresses gaps in youth football development.

“What everybody is trying to do, especially with the programs that he’s running, is to close the gap that we have in youth football.

It was very important for him to come in and share not just ideas, but everything he has researched,” Ntseki said.

Similarly, Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis expressed excitement, noting that the manual will also benefit female players who often lack access to structured grassroots coaching.

“When you start from grassroots level, you get players that are technically, physically, and mentally better.

Coach Pitso’s return to this level shows his passion for football and developing the next generation,” Ellis remarked.

Impact and Consequences

The introduction of Mosimane’s Youth Football Manual is expected to have wide-ranging effects:

  • Elevated Coaching Standards: Grassroots coaches gain structured guidance for age-appropriate development.

  • Improved Player Development: Young players will develop stronger skills and tactical understanding from an early age.

  • Boost for Women’s Football: Girls receive structured training opportunities, helping bridge gender gaps.

  • Long-Term Football Growth: Standardized grassroots programs lay the foundation for national talent pipelines.

What’s Next?

  • SAFA plans to roll out the manual to coaches across South Africa, including schools and community programs.

  • Training workshops and seminars may accompany the manual to ensure effective implementation.

  • Monitoring and feedback mechanisms could be introduced to track player development outcomes over time.

Summary

Pitso Mosimane’s Youth Football Manual marks a milestone for South African grassroots football.

By offering age-specific coaching guidance and focusing on technical, physical, and tactical growth, the manual promises to uplift both boys’ and girls’ football nationwide.

SAFA’s leadership has welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential to close development gaps and nurture the next generation of football stars.
