Bafana Bafana will round off a busy international window when they take on Egypt in a high-profile friendly at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, 4 October.

The match comes after South Africa opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with victories over Guinea and Eritrea. Bafana defeated Guinea before producing a commanding 5–0 victory over Eritrea in Cairo.

South Africa currently sit at the top of their qualifying group with six points from their opening two matches.

Mosimane plans major changes against the Pharaohs

Despite the importance of the Egypt fixture, coach Pitso Mosimane has indicated that he intends to use the opportunity to assess players who have had limited game time.

SAFA reported on Friday that Mosimane is preparing to make wholesale changes, with the coach keen to give more members of his squad an opportunity during the extended international window.

The Egypt match is therefore expected to look considerably different from the teams that started against Guinea and Eritrea.

Mosimane has already stressed that the extended camp was designed to allow him to evaluate his squad rather than rely exclusively on an established starting XI.

Young players given an opportunity

The Bafana coach has placed particular emphasis on giving younger players an opportunity to experience international football.

With the two AFCON qualifiers completed, the friendly provides a chance to examine players in a demanding environment against one of Africa’s established national teams.

Mosimane has called for patience and support for the younger members of his squad, arguing that they need opportunities at senior international level if they are to develop into dependable options for future campaigns.

The coach’s broader objective is also to begin building a squad capable of competing through the next World Cup cycle.

Egypt provides a demanding test

The decision to rotate the squad means several players could be given valuable minutes against an experienced Egyptian side.

Egypt and South Africa have already met in competitive action in recent years, including at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Pharaohs recorded a 1–0 victory over Bafana.

The upcoming friendly gives South Africa another opportunity to assess themselves against Egypt, this time without the pressure of a competitive fixture.

Egypt are also using the match as part of their preparations for the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

Predicted Bafana Bafana starting XI

With Mosimane expected to make substantial changes, the predicted South African lineup is:

Sipho Chaine; Thabang Matuludi, Ime Okon, Khulumani Ndamane, Samukele Kabini; Brooklyn Poggenpoel, Teboho Mokoena; Themba Zwane, Tshepang Moremi, Cassius Mailula; Puso Dithejane.

The selection would provide several less-established players with the chance to demonstrate their ability at senior international level.

When is Egypt vs Bafana Bafana?

The friendly is scheduled for Sunday, 4 October 2026, at the Cairo International Stadium.

Kick-off is listed for 20:00 South African time, although some Egyptian and international listings give the corresponding local time as 21:00 in Cairo.

The fixture concludes an extended international window that has already included South Africa’s two opening AFCON qualifiers.

More than just a friendly for Mosimane

Although the result will not affect the AFCON qualifying table, the match represents an important evaluation opportunity for Mosimane.

South Africa have already collected the maximum six points available from their opening qualifiers, allowing the coach greater scope to experiment with his squad against Egypt.

The focus will consequently be on how the emerging players respond to the demands of international football and whether they can establish themselves as genuine options for future Bafana Bafana selections.
