Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has recently shared the psychological impact he endured after a violent home invasion in Barcelona that left him physically and emotionally scarred.
The incident occurred in 2022, just days before he made the move from Barcelona to Chelsea.
The Violent Robbery
In the seaside town of Castelldefels, a group of at least four armed men broke into Aubameyang’s home.
They stole valuables including jewellery, watches, and even his white Audi A3.
The situation escalated when one of the robbers attacked Aubameyang, striking his jaw with a metal-packed glove, leaving him with a broken jaw.
The attack shook him to his core, resulting in sleepless nights and lasting mental scars.
Mental Health Struggles
The trauma of the event had a profound effect on Aubameyang, who admits he bottled up his emotions and never sought help.
Despite being a mentally resilient person, he struggled with constant thoughts of the robbery, particularly when his children, who had also been affected, expressed fear. “I was always thinking about this,” he reflects.
“I did so many nights like this, not sleeping at all, just thinking about that s**t. You have some nightmares.”
He shared how his children’s fear of being alone and reluctance to return to Barcelona weighed heavily on him.
Aubameyang now acknowledges that not seeking therapy may have hindered his healing process.
“I made a mistake not talking to anyone,” he confessed, recognizing the toll it took on both him and his family.
The Harrowing Incident
Aubameyang’s son, Curtys, played a critical role in alerting him to the intruders.
As the robbers took control of the situation, Aubameyang wanted to protect his family, even contemplating confronting them with a weapon.
However, his fear for the safety of his loved ones took precedence.
“I wanted to fight but one guy went down and took my kids and sister-in-law. At that point, I couldn’t do anything,” he said.
During the ordeal, the robbers physically attacked Aubameyang with an iron bar, and his wife, Alysha Behague, also suffered a blow to the head.
Despite being injured, they both chose not to seek immediate medical attention in order to avoid further distressing their young children, Curtys and Pierre.
The Aftermath and Move to Saudi Arabia
The gang had reportedly been watching Aubameyang’s house for weeks and had previously attempted to break in when he was away on a pre-season tour.
Despite the traumatic event, Aubameyang continued his football career, moving to Chelsea shortly after the robbery.
However, after a brief stint at Stamford Bridge, he found a new home in the Saudi Pro League, joining Al-Qadsiah in search of safety and a fresh start.
Although Aubameyang could have stayed in European football—after an impressive season with Marseille where he scored 30 goals—his decision to move to Saudi Arabia was driven by a need for peace of mind.
His new life in the Middle East has been successful, with Aubameyang scoring seven goals in just 13 appearances.
Looking Forward
Now playing under the guidance of former Real Madrid midfielder Michel, Aubameyang’s new team, Al-Qadsiah, is performing well in their first season back in the Saudi Pro League, currently sitting third in the standings.
Aubameyang is slowly rebuilding his life and career, proving that even after enduring such traumatic events, there is hope for recovery and success.
