Phil Taylor Announces End of Legendary Darts Career After Withdrawing from World Seniors Masters Due to Severe Hip Injury in Stoke-on-Trent

A remarkable journey is drawing to a close as darts legend Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor announces the end of his celebrated career.

This decision comes after the champion had to withdraw from his final tournament, the World Seniors Masters, due to a persistent hip injury.

Struggles with Injury

Taylor, a 16-time world champion, has been grappling with recovery since undergoing surgery earlier this summer.

He candidly expressed the struggles he’s faced, stating that the recovery process has subjected him to “the worst pain ever.”

This pain has made it impossible for him to throw darts properly, let alone compete at a high level in a major tournament.

The World Seniors Masters, set for November, was intended to mark Taylor’s final competitive appearance.

Since returning to the sport in 2022, following his retirement in 2018, fans were eager to see him one last time on the oche. Unfortunately, it seems that fate had other plans.

A Personal Reflection

In an interview with Online Darts, the Stoke-born 65-year-old opened up about his ongoing struggles with his hip. ‘

“I’m struggling a bit with my hip. Scar tissue,” he explained. Despite initially feeling fine, he experienced a setback after overexerting himself, resulting in torn scar tissue.

“It’s been the worst pain I’ve ever had these last 12 months. Honestly, I’ll be glad when this year is gone,” he added.

Although he’s managed to practice to some extent, prolonged play leads to unbearable pain.

“It’s like having toothache and it drives me crazy,” Taylor admitted, revealing just how taxing the injury has been on him.

Looking Back on a Legendary Career

Despite the challenges, Taylor remains optimistic when reflecting on his incredible career.

He acknowledges the joy he’s experienced over the past 35 years and recognizes that it’s time to step away from the professional scene.

“I’ll always love performing to the best of my ability, but time waits for no man,” he shared.

His intention is to ensure he leaves the sport on a high note, continuing to work hard for his fans.

Throughout his illustrious career, Taylor clinched 16 World Championships, starting with the BDO World Championship in 1990 and the PDC World Championship in 1995.

He achieved a record-breaking eight consecutive championship victories and won an additional seven titles over his career, with his last triumph occurring in 2013 against Michael van Gerwen.

In total, he reached 21 world finals, secured six Premier League titles, and led England to four World Cup victories.

His impressive tally includes 214 professional titles, along with a staggering 85 major wins.

What Lies Ahead?

As Phil Taylor prepares to exit the competitive darts scene, fans and players alike will remember him not just for his remarkable achievements, but also for his undeniable impact on the sport.

The next chapter may be unwritten, but one thing is certain: The Power will be missed in the world of darts.
