Peter and Christine Scott have shared a remarkable 46-year marriage filled with love and happiness.
But recently, their world was shaken when Christine, a former nurse, was diagnosed with early-stage vascular dementia.
This diagnosis prompted them to make a difficult and profound decision—to be among the first British couples to use a double suicide pod, known as the Sarco, in Switzerland.
Facing Fears and Family Support
After gathering their family for an emotional discussion, Peter, 86, and Christine, 80, shared their concerns about the future.
They worried about the physical and mental decline that often accompanies old age and the potential financial strain of long-term care.
Their children, although heartbroken, have reluctantly agreed to support their parents’ decision.
Planning Their Final Moments Together
The Scotts are now in the process of registering with The Last Resort, a Swiss-based organization that offers assisted dying using the Sarco.
While the device hasn’t been used yet, its creator, Philip Nitschke, expects the first suicide to occur soon.
The couple plans to wait for the release of the twin model of the machine later this year before proceeding.
Advocating for the Right to Choose
Peter and Christine have openly discussed their decision, hoping to raise awareness and lend support to the campaign for legalizing assisted dying in the UK.
Currently, assisted dying remains illegal, but there are discussions in Parliament about changing the law.
Peter expressed his frustration, saying, “We understand other people may not share our feelings, and we respect their position.
What we want is the right to choose.”
The Invention of the Sarco
The Sarco, a death pod invented by Philip Nitschke, was initially created in response to a request from Tony Nicklinson, a British stroke victim who was left paralyzed.
The device operates by replacing the air inside with pure nitrogen, rendering the occupant unconscious before they pass away peacefully.
The Scotts plan to use this method for their final moments together.
A Poignant Farewell
In preparation for their final days, Christine has planned a peaceful walk in the Swiss Alps, a delicious meal of fish, and a glass of Merlot.
She’s even created a playlist of meaningful songs, including “Wild Cat Blues” and “The Young Ones” by Cliff Richard.
Peter, a former RAF engineer, shares her sentiments and has expressed his desire to hold her close as they face their final moments together.
A Legacy of Love and Determination
The couple has spent their lives together, raising a family and creating lasting memories.
Now, as they approach the end of their journey, they are determined to make a choice that reflects their love, dignity, and autonomy.
As Christine says, “At the point I thought I was losing myself, I’d say, ‘This is it, Pete, I don’t want to go any further.’”
Peter, always by her side, agrees: “I’d just give her a big hug and say, ‘Hope to see you later.’”
