Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan Assumes Control of Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Following Betta Edu’s Suspension Over Alleged N585 Million Fraud

Change in Ministry Leadership

Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has assumed control of the ministry’s operations.

This development follows the suspension of the minister, Betta Edu, who faced allegations of involvement in a N585 million fraud.

Minister’s Suspension

Betta Edu faced accusations of channeling public funds into private accounts, leading to her suspension by Bola Tinubu on Monday, Jan. 8.

The suspension prompted Enitan to step into the role as directed by a letter from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Presidential Directive and Investigative Panel

The suspension was accompanied by a presidential directive for Edu to cooperate fully with investigating authorities.

Additionally, a panel led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance was tasked with a comprehensive review of the financial structure governing social investment programs.

The aim was to reform relevant institutions and programs to enhance effectiveness and regain public trust. This directive came as part of efforts to address institutional weaknesses and ensure the exclusive benefit of disadvantaged households.
