The Coast Guard is looking into a chemical odor that reportedly made passengers sick on a cruise liner in Virginia on Wednesday night.
Passengers on the Carnival Magic cruise ship were reported to be vomiting and feeling nauseated after reporting chemical odors on board.
When the ship arrived in Norfolk on Thursday morning, members of the Coast Guard were scheduled to board it to further investigate the chemical odor.
It departed for a six-day cruise to the Bahamas, intended to mark its return to the seas after a break due to Covid-19.
The cruise ship went first to the Bimini Islands on May 23, then to the Grand Bahama Island the day after, set to arrive back at Norfolk on May 26 at 8:00am.
The latest party voyage was the first cruise vacation to depart from Norfolk since 2019.
Officials told 13News Now no one is in immediate distress.
Crews at the Half Moone Cruise Center terminal are preparing for the ship’s arrival.
Nauticus, which operates Half Moone, called the seasons the busiest year ever for cruises, according to WTKR.
Carnival Magic, the largest cruise ship to ever sail out of Virginia, carries more than 4,000 passengers.
The ship is 11 years old, owned by the Carnival Corporation, built in Italy by Fincantieri, with Panama as its flag state.
